RE: Keatts replacement
During the time Lutz was Gottfried's top assistant, State did not recruit enough 4 year players and coach them up. Too many players left after 1 or 2 years to turn pro or transferred.

Hard to pin that on an assistant coach unless you have some inside info.

RE: Keatts replacement
I like the idea of an assistant from a top notch "press style" program. Assistants are exposed to the "recipe" to succeed at a high level with that style of play. I suppose any coach can adopt the style and may succeed. I just think the overall strategy involves recruiting, conditioning and game adjustments to succeed, and that comes best from knowing the system top to bottom in a successful program.

My preference would be a current Pitino assistant or a current Shaka Smart assistant. Both of those hires would also keep our level of excitement at UNCW on track. The next best option would, IMO, be the Mt. St. Mary's coach who was a VCU assistant and has quickly shown success and a turnaround as a head coach in just two years.

And I just don't know enough about Siddle to have an informed opinion. Keatts was at least a HC at a powerhouse private school with phenomenal success. I would, for sure, like to keep him on staff. He does a great job recruiting and has a good relationship with the players and recruits. He would bring stability to the transition. If we could continue our success, and find ourselves with another coach moving up in 3-4 years, he would be much better prepared having assisted two successful coaches at UNCW.

And no, there is no way a re tread older coach on the way out works at this point. Mostly because there aren't many who had success in a press style system available. Billy Donovan would be my lone exception.

I don't see the problem with Siddle. He has had 3 years to learn from Keatts. Thats the same amount of time Keatts was with Pitino. He even spent a year at Hargrave.

82, I'm not sure I understand why you would prefer an assistant to Jamion Christian. He meets all of the criteria that you mention regarding top notch assistants, but he's also been a head coach and successfully ran his own program. He's clearly the leader IMO.

Also, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss retreads. Anthony Grant and Darrin Horn are retreads, but they're both worthy of consideration.

Christian or a top current assistant are close, IMO. And when I think of retreads, I think of old guys. Horn and Grant are still fairly young. If we looked at Grant, Christian and Horn, i'd be thrilled.

Maybe we should just wait and see what names turn up in the Arkansas State hunt (Moton was their guy before he turned it down, now Balado is their top candidate).

According to their message board, they were paying their previous coach $350k. Moton's obviously not interested in just any job.

After reading about Christain, I like him. Knows the CAA, young, has his kids play at a fast pace...also, has head coaching experience. Played a tough schedule and beat George Mason this year...

My Bad, Made the same mistake someone else made when there was a thread posted recently. I was thinking Donovon. I think Billy's style would differ too much from the direction we'd like to stay.

I'd pass on both. Hubert is one of the nicest people in the world, brings a successful NBA career with him, can resonate with recruits, and everyone of our shooters would improve. I'm not certain he's cut out to be, or even is interested in being a HC.

I haven't seen any lists or confirmation that we've reached out to anyone specifically. Based on the names that we've discussed, Christian, Horn and Grant are the most appealing. We struck gold with an assistant, but I'd prefer to go with someone that has ran a program before this go around.

I really like the idea of Christian, especially if Siddle would fit on his staff.
