From the names that I've heard associated (Brian Mull), my preferences would be:
1. Jamion Christian
2. LeVelle Moton
3. Wes Miller
4. Chris Caputo

Other candidates that I like:
1. Darrin Horn
2. King Rice
3. Kenny Johnson

I would be interested in hearing the players' thoughts on the subject.

I wouldn't. It's great that they're emotionally connected to Siddle, but this is a major decision and it needs to be made based on reason and logic, rather than emotion.

Exactly. And the players are only here for a short time. These decisions impact future players and a host of other things.

I didn't say I would let them make the decision. I said I'd be interested in hearing their thoughts.

At this point their thoughts are probably similar to ours. A mixture of bitter and waiting to see what the school does. It would serve them best with the next coach to not talk a lot. I'd hate for any of them to burn a bridge with the next coach and get Chuck'd.

By simply hearing their thoughts, you're introducing the emotion of 18-22 yo kids into a hire that will have a huge financial impact on university. If Bass thinks it will appease the players, and help keep them engaged and committed, that's fine. In terms of a final decision, they should have as much input as the average Hawk's Nest poster.

That said, I'm all for keeping Siddle on staff as an assistant.

I love you, brother, but that's a real stretch. Saying the players shouldn't have any more input that you, or me, or The Mullet is a little much. And I'll bet you a dollar that (whether they are asked or not) Mr. Bass's thoughts will be influenced by whether he thinks the new hire has the best chance of keeping players around.

FWIW, it's far from unprecedented.

Butler hired 30 year old Brad Stevens as its head coach after players urged their AD to hire from within:

The Butler players had a meeting with athletic director Barry Collier, urging him to promote from within.[19] Collier, having spent the entire season observing the assistant coaches' interaction with the team, agreed.

Haha...yes, that is probably too far. For every Brad Stephens, I would bet there are five Carl Torbush stories though. Regardless of our success with Wainwright/Brownell, and more recently with Keatts, the course of the program is entirely dependent on hiring the right guy.

I think it was you that said earlier that none of us are equipped to evaluate candidates the way Bass is, and I agree completely. If Siddle is the guy, I'll keep my doubts to myself and support the hire. I just want it to be for the right reasons.

RE: Keatts replacement
We have about four options it seems..
Option #1. Hire a coach with winning Division one head coaching experience from a conference below the CAA (Best bet in my opinion)
Option #2. Hire a top notch assistant from a high profile P5 conference (Huge gamble but could be high reward)
Option #3. Hire what I commonly refer to as a retread... A middle age guy that knows the game (A gamble because sometimes these guys lose the fire in their bellies)
Option #4. Hire from within the present staff

I'm not sure why, as Im sure there are many out there, but with option #1, I hope we at least interiew Levelle Moton (Just a gut feeling, but I think he would do well) I don't really know the game well enough to list anyone from Option #2. As far as Option #3, If we decided this was the route to go, I personally think it would be worthwhile to contact Bobby Lutz...The guy knows the game, and I think he still has what it takes to coach at this level. Option #4 would obviously be coach Siddle.Theres my .02 cents worth fellas

Bricks no need to keep your doubts to yourself. Siddle is not our guy. Keatts is trying to set him up for a HC job, but he is not ready. If our AD goes with him, then something is seriously wrong.

Bennie Moss is a very good assistant basketball coach, but he wasn't prepared for UNCW. Lutz is a great coach. A GREAT coach. From his days at Pfeiffer and then at UNCC, he can coach. But, his days as a head coach are behind him IMO. I would take a hard pass on Lutz.

RE: Keatts replacement
Lutz was great at UNCC when they were in CUSA. The program fell off as soon as they moved to the A10.

He did not demonstrate the ability to recruit 4 year players that played in a conference of teams with 4 year players. His success was when he was recruiting guys who thought they'd be in college for 2 years. Those players were not willing to go to an A10 school.

If he could not do that at age 47, it is hard to think he's learned how now that he's 59. His time at State did not help him recruit and coach 4 year players. That's why Gottfried's gone and Keatts took his place.

We should not hire someone on the decline. Assistant from a National Championship program is the best option

RE: Keatts replacement
Gottfried being gone has nothing to do with Lutz. Many people say the exact opposite, that had Lutz remained in Raleigh this year, Gottfried might still be employed.

From a recruiting stand point, your explanation and timing with the switch from the CUSA to A10 makes sense. I don't recall the specifics, but Michael Beasley was almost a 49er.
