There's a difference between ceiling and results. UConn basketball has a very high ceiling, but it wasn't good this year (we weren't terribly good, either).

I think Syracuse basketball has a high ceiling

I'd say the same about UConn. I really do miss the games, and we can agree to disagree about UConn fb if you want, but I really do miss playing UConn bb in conference.

Dropping UConn football for a second to reminisce about old times, I really wish that UConn played round ball in the same conference as SU. I do unequivocally think that you would make the ACC a better basketball conference.

If I had it my way, UConn, Georgetown, and Villanova would all play ACC bb. The rivalries are/were real, the players are/were great, and the coaches are/were larger than life. THOSE were fun games. The ACC isn't the same in that regard.

See the difference?

And SU spent a long, long time not being ina power conference. We were Indy until '91. We literally ate what we killed for about 100 years.

I'm saying why should the future be different than the recent past, your saying why should the future be different than the recent past and not the same as 20 or more years ago.

Syracuse has a 100+ year history of ups and downs. Those cycles have lasted 20-30 years. So yes, I think we'll be back. My faith is especially confirmed given that the impetus to get SU out of the last down cycle was a large facilities investment, like the one that the school is debating right now.

BC was very, very good within the last 10 years (BC was #2 in the nation for 2 weeks 10 seasons ago, and BC has won several division titles over FSU and Clemson in that time). So yes, I think that'll be back.

UConn has never been good - not even for a season. So no, I'm not sold that you will ever get there on a consistent basis. And as a mirror to SU, P&E was built in 1998(?), which means it's just south of 20 years old, so you have another ~20-30 years before there are going to be significant investments in it. Unlike at SU, the cavalry isn't coming for UConn.

I guess we're at an impass. I think Northeast football above Penn State is perminantly down. The Northeast conference got blown up, no more kings up here, college football has changed since the glory days. In my opinion if Kalpony wants to tell me we're not worthy I can take it. If a Cuse of BC fan tells me we're not worthy I'll tell them we're in the same sinking ship.

I don't think that there are any kings in the NE (other than possibly PSU). I agree there.

I do, however, think that stars can align at SU and BC for a year/a couple of years. And when they do, I think that either school can field a team as good as anyone - even if our program isn't as good as the southern teams.

UConn hasn't shown that it can make stars align. That's the difference in my mind.

And in the 80's UConn couldn't win in basketball either. You were complaining about small sample sizes earlier. UConn football at FBS is a small sample the stars haven't aligned at Cuse since UConn made the jump.

Yea, BC and Cuse signed up to be bodybag games for the southern teams. Same reason I don't get excited about the thought of a theoretical B1G invite. I get that the monetary aspect means they can't turn an invite down, but I'd rather play basketball in the Big East and go 8-4/9-3 as a football indy playing a couple P5 teams and a group of other indys/G5s.

I'd rather hold out and hope for the ACC or Big 10. They're both premier basketball conferences. Our football might get killed in them but it will probably get killed outside them. At least inside the cartel we get the built in recruiting advantages.

Well, I don't think that UConn is incapable of playing at the G5 level and again, money aside, I'd rather watch a team win the majority of their games against lesser competition and just have a fun little precursor to basketball than be like BC or Rutgers and get killed in-conference on a regular basis for a paycheck.

1) True, but UConn BB was always better positioned than UConn FB (see recruiting area), and UConn BB had the 90's to convince me.
2) Your second point is painfully true, but I think that we'll be back for 10-15 years once we build a new dome/renovate the Dome. We're investing in the program again, and we have history. I know that doesn't sound like a lot to you, but SU has been in this situation before (see 1970's for the most recent example).

It turns out that Johns Hopkins isn't the only lacrosse school in the B1G.

It kills me that they're #1, but I have absolute faith that RU will blow it.

Also, JHU isn't the only lax school. I know you weren't talking abou thte Terps, but UMD has a very strong program.

Yea, but Maryland basketball's respectable. Their football's even okay sometimes. Close to being a well-rounded AD. Rutgers has lax and that's it.

That would be one hell of an 18 team basketball conference!

To be fair, I think that RU would be killed in most g5 conference. I think that we can both agree w/ that 04-cheers

But if we had Syracuse, UConn and Temple in conference...

We tried that, and Rutgers lose 75% of their games to Syracuse.

Last 10 years was a little more of an even split.

It was also the worst decade of SU fb ever and the best decade of RU fb since the 1800's.

Never going to happen. I can easily list the programs that would oppose that:

BC, Clemson, FSU, Louisville, NC State, Virginia Tech. Probably throw in Wake Forest for good measure (losing NC State), along with GT and Miami (opposed to watering down the football product)

If you are math challenged it's going to take twelve schools to vote yes. You don't have twelve votes even if you exclude the "maybes".
