Other CAA posters on Keatts departure
Ok, now we have to make a great hire. Making a trip around the message boards and there seems to be much glee that Keatts is gone from UNCW. Selfish perspective, of course, with a short term thought process of "getting theirs".

I don't recall any joy in Seahawk country when VCU, ODU and GMU left the conference so we could move to the top of a weak conference. Let's build a program with this next hire, and get out of this lowest common denominator mentality conference and into the A10, where schools aren't hoping for the demise of their competition.

I was excited to see CofC come on board to improve the CAA and provide competition. Screw em'. The only boards where I found no joy at our loss was Delaware and Towson.

82 it's envy! We have owned the league for 3 years, now they feel like they have a chance again. I get that perspective 100%. Doesn't make it right, but I get it

VCU, George Mason and ODU all left when UNCW sucked. I do not recall any discussion about how those losses would "allow" UNCW to rise back to the top.

That might have had something to do with the lingering impact of Mehrtens being our AD and DePaolo being our Chancellor around that time. We could have joined the SWAC then and still sucked in basketball because of those 2 morons.

DePaullo was THE worst chancellor for UNCW sports. Satarelli seems much more engaged in Seahawk Basketball which will help us keep on track

it was one poster and several others said that they'd rather see him stay so that the league in general has to raise the level of play.

Best of luck with the new hire.

Other fans' opinions shouldn't matter to us. Most of us understand the life of a mid-major, and I'm sure that these other fan bases understand that their coach, with success, could be next. William and Mary is probably the only exception in the CAA.

I'd venture to say the only team that stands a chance to lose their coach in the midst of quick success like us is CofC. Earl Grant, if he goes on a run of a couple championships and maybe picks up a win or two in the NCAAs could attract similar attention. His chances have certainly improved with the departure of Keatts from the conference.

Right now, yes, Grant is the only one that has that potential. But it's all based on success. Either their teams remain mediocre and they keep their coach until they're tired of finishing in 5th, or they find that they've hired the right guy and make a few runs to the NCAAT and then their coach moves on.

Towson message board believes Skerry could be on the radar to leave. If he can keep recruiting and keep Towson playing well, they could be right.

I think the best Skerry could do is a high mid major.

I hope Grant is in the discussion for open coaching jobs at the end of next year. Again, good luck on the next hire.

It was mentioned on Dieharddogs, but no replies about it...

Haven't seen a peep from the Drexel folks. However, good coaches moving is all part of the mid major conferences. They key is always to get a coach who has the potential to move up, because it means he did a good job while here. Settling for a coach to be here forever is an out dated methodology that likely screams of being mediocre at best.

I don't think it is outdated, Dan, I just think it is rare.

If it's the RIGHT coach, it's not outdated. Continuity is always a good thing when the coach is successful. Especially if that kind of continuity and success elevates the profile of the program, athletic dept, and university to the point where they became a national power, not "just a mid-major". SEE: VCU, Wichita State, Gonzaga.

RE: Other CAA posters on Keatts departure
I agree but in reality it is impossible to have a good coach and continuity at the mid major level, because it means the coach is settled and not trying to achieve greater things. The only exception is if it is an alum who has some special tie to that school where they would be content being at a lower level. So by outdated I mean success can very much be had with a moving coach, as long as the administration values a specific system.

I know it's hard to consider Gonzaga a mid, but you think he hasn't heard better offers?

It took a couple years and numerous P5 offers to lure Shaka Smart from VCU.

It can be done, but not ever likely at UNCW.
