...so what's the best widely commercially available mustard-based BBQ sauce?

Cattleman's is the only national brand I have ever seen. It's OK, but I didn't think it was quite spicy enough.

If you would like to order a bottle I suggest Shealy's BBhttp://http://www.shealysbbq.com/sauce.php

Whenever I'm anywhere close at lunch or supper I tend to end up there. It was also on Andrew Zimmer's show recently.

A Day at B’s Barbecue
At a Greenville landmark with no phone, no frills, and no equal, we spent 17 hours learning what makes the pork and the place so special.

B's is a classic.

B's is a classic.

B's is an interesting place. They are one of the few places around with a true "pit." That pic shows recent painting of the exterior. Prior to that there was a couple of decades with no paint on the exterior. The place is tiny and they even serve food out of the window on the side. If you aren't there by 11:00 you probably won't get any food.

Sticky Fingers has a mustard base in the grocery stores here which is pretty good.

I think it's like sex in another way as well. I think we tend to look at the BBQ we had for our first time as the best.

When I met my wife's family for the first time, she was still in Germany. When I arrived in North Carolina, their first question was how I felt about BBQ. I was being tested as husband material. They, of course, realized that being from New York I had no idea what good BBQ was, so they took me out to one of their finer dining establishments - Parker's in Wilson, NC.

So vinegar based is always going to be the best for me. The next night I was taken to Wilber's in Goldsboro. About the biggest difference I could tell was that there were more baseball caps on the patrons at Wilber's (mostly John Deere and NASCAR). I assumed that was because Parker's was on the main north-south highway at the time (I-95 wasn't built yet) and had more northerners just passing through.

Clearly, BBQ wasn't just about the food - it was more like a religion.

EDIT: Duh. I-40 wasn't built yet either, but it was I-95 that eventually ran north-south through NC.

Your first time was better than mine.

You started off at two of the best.
