Though some decent stretches since then, but it has felt like its slowly been downhill since Rendon broke his ankle at LSU in the super regionals.
Slight downhill trajectory from that point to end of last season. This season Rice baseball does a Wile E Coyote base jump from a cliff......

Maybe Hallmark was the real genius on the staff. Mizzou seems to be doing pretty well.

Possibly....but Hallmark also recruited these pitchers who can't hit the ocean from a boat.

Hallmark looked for guys who had good stuff. Once he got them on campus, he worked with their control. He is a HUGE reason why the pitching staffs have been so successful.

I can buy that. So what do you think is going on?

I think the walk numbers have been a lot lower in the past because Rice has always had 5-6 guys who pounded the zone and ate up innings. Because of that, the guys who threw a ton of balls did not get see the mound that often. The coaches had no problem riding those guys (which all of us would do the same). This year, we don't have 5-6 guys who have clearly set themselves apart from the rest of the pen. Therefore we are seeing a lot of guys get some innings that would have never seen game action in years past.
I do however think the BB/9 inn ratio will go down starting this weekend (maybe not this weekend if it's freezing) or next. At this point, all of the starters have had plenty of outings to get their full arm strength back and can be expected to go deeper into games. If Myers, Canterino, and whoever the hell our third starter is can throw strikes, there is no reason for them to go 6-7+ innings every week.

Lol...ONLY if our starting pitchers can go deep into ball games. If not...chalk the season up as a loss and let us all be grumpy

UT did not wait around for Augi to leave. He wanted to stay on with a new contract but UT got rid of him at the right time, not Rice. (03-16-2017 11:24 AM)RiceOwl Wrote: (03-16-2017 11:12 AM)ausowl Wrote: But yes, this year feels like UT last year.
UT seemed to have turned a new page fairly quickly with DP.

Augie was at the Sunday UCLA game,. Whatever transpired must not have engendered hard feelings.

I come in peace...
But I am curious about the comparison between Graham and Augie.
Augie was ousted at Texas and even though he won a national championship and became the NCAA all-time winningest coach - his winning percentage at Texas was .659. Texas as a program has an all-time winning percentage of .730.
You guys on the other hand were pretty bad for most of your existence before Graham. In 83 years in the SWC, you guys finished in the bottom half 72 times. You guys hired Graham in 1992 and became one of the best if not the best program in college sports. Unlike Augie, Graham built the program.
I think that makes things quite a bit different but you guys are much closer to it than me.

You are 100% correct, and that's why this is such a tricky situation. Graham built the program, no doubt about it. All of our success is because of him. But we are also miles away from the peak of what he built, and seemingly slide further away (and further into irrelevance) every year.

You are correct, it is a very different situation. That's why I think Graham will be allowed to coach next year if he wants.
I think there's just a lot of us who have been quietly thinking maybe he should have retired already, and now are becoming less quiet about it.

You nailed it. On top of that, there has NOT been a day since 1992 where I would have taken Garrido over Wayne Graham as head coach. We realize just how lucky we have been over that run.
If UT could go back to 1992 and retroactively hire Graham, they would do it in a heartbeat.
