Back from exile, Forbes realizing college coaching dream
It's a mixed blessing seeing Coach Forbes getting this kind of publicity, but I'm really happy for him; he's certainly earned it:
From inside a Southern Arkansas dorm room, Steve Forbes' dream began with the repetitive pecking of an electric typewriter. The pattern, though, was frustratingly consistent. Write, mail, denied. Then repeat.
Some 200 letters were produced, all aiming for the same thing: a chance to coach college basketball. So when Forbes, then a determined college senior in 1988, finally received that one bite — and it was literally one — the Lone Tree native stopped at nothing to make it happen. That meant adding a detour to his honeymoon.

"He's always about helping each other, whether it's on the court or off the court," senior guard A.J. Merriweather said. "He wants you to be a better basketball player and a better man. Off the court, he tries to make all these jokes like he's a comedian, but he's cool. He makes us laugh. I love him."
Forbes also can help his players recover from whatever adversity comes their way. His climb up the ladder offers several life lessons. "Anything can happen," Forbes said. "You've got to keep working. You've got to look in the mirror. You can't play the blame game and you've just got to keep grinding. Fortunately, I'm back to where I wanted to be when this all started."
