What sector are you in?

Real estate. But, if someone is decent at math/finance and has good character and willingness to learn(willingness to take a lot more real estate related classes), I dont care what their major is.

No, unfortunately I don't need marketing as I have a pretty set client base and cannot take on new clients. In my world, marketing just doesn't add enough value to offset costs.

Just for the hell of it and for no other reason than to see where this goes, I'd like to see folks chime in with a Pro and Con list of building the new football Stadium by the Oceanfront at the proposed arena site.

I am 1000% aware that this would never happen- but I am bored and just had the idea cross my mind.

People talk regional cooperation, regional cooperation, regional cooperation, but how on earth does it make any sense for citizens of VB and Chesapeake to pay for an arena in Norfolk? Where is the ROI. This is a pipe dream that only non stakeholders ever propose.

I mean, this is the long and short of the discussion in my opinion:

Quote:And we all know that taxpayers in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake would rather drink castor oil than subsidize an arena in Norfolk.

I also think the juxtaposition of these two comments is extremely apt.

Haven't read this one yet. However, regional cooperation doesn't always have to mean a financial commitment. It could just be time, energy and an idea exchange. Right now, even that is rare.

Not that I think it will ever happen, because if it doesn't benefit me me me then why would I want to pay? Under this line of thinking, we shouldn't build interstates in the midwest because I never travel there. If it doesn't benefit me, I don't want to pay for it, right?

As the article says, most arenas don't make money. They are a benefit to us to be able to use it, to attract bigger shows, attract bigger teams(?), and in general if you want to use it you go spend your money there. Or, you could say "my taxes!" and then this region could just stay the way it is and not grow, and left with less entertainment for the rest of us. Doesn't seem like a good attitude to have, in my opinion. (edit, words are hard sometimes)

First, if Norfolk, where I live, is spending money to build interstates in the mid west, I have a problem. You seem to be conflating federal government with local government.

Your second point also misses the mark. You almost pointed out the exact reason that it does not make sense for VB or Chesapeake to throw their taxpayers' money at a stadium in NFK. The only economic benefit that comes from a stadium is the positive effect it may have on revitalizing the immediately neighboring area. Why would you ever think it is okay to confiscate VB residents' hard earned money for redevelopment in NFK?

Any of the above mentioned cities could absolutely afford to go it alone to build a stadium, the problem is political cowardice, because they know there would be blow back by the eternal complainers for taking the leap. Norfolk just spent damn near enough to build a stadium on The Main, a commitment that I completely agree with, and if NFK can drop that much cash on an amenity, Chesapeake and VB can surely afford to spend that kind of money as well. The problem isn't that we need regional cooperation because nobody can afford to do it alone, the problem is nobody wants to take the political risk alone.

RE: Virginia Beach arena update
If the state would ever pass legislation to legalize casinos in Virginia then I could see the possibility of getting a new arena built on the Military Circle site. Just open the land area up for casino bids with the stipulation that the bid must include a significantly sized arena - say at least 15,000 seats, and the casino must bring in entertainment to the casino including college basketball tournaments. It would be worth a shot, but first the state legislature would have to pass the bill to allow it. Back in the 70's, ODU use to host the Kawanis ODU Classic and had some great teams come in for the 4 team tournament. It started when ODU was still in Division 2 and I believe it continued for a year or two after they moved up to Division 1 (late 70's).

My wife and I had a nice time 10 years ago at a Thanksgiving basketball tournament held at the casino arena in Las Vegas. I remember ODU playing UNC. Don't remember who they played in the second game. We ate lunch with the team at the casino the day before the game. At least I believe it was the day before.

Alright think differently. Your taxes pay for universities in Richmond, Alexandria, Charlottesville, Farmville, Radford, and a few other places across the commonwealth that you will probably never spend much time to the benefit of thousands of other people across the state. They also pay for state highways, bridges, and infrastructure across the state. Why should we not cooperate in benefit of our own region, we already have our taxes go to projects across the state that do nothing for us or for Hampton Roads.

The point of my interstate is your hard earned federal taxes that you pay go across the country to improve things elsewhere. It's the same school of thought, whether you want to take a shot at the semantics of it instead, be my guest.

It's the same concept as the 2nd point. Would people of chesapeake or vb go to this arena? Maybe. Maybe not. What matters is improvement in the area and giving people the option. We can continue to let the cities attempt it themselves, and give people smaller less optimal options. We can continue to let VB attempt it alone - see how well that went? It didn't even make sense to put one at the edge of 264 in the first place... why not make a benefit that has easier access for everyone in the southside besides those who live at the oceanfront?
