I'd like to see Norfolk State and Hampton advertise their programs more. Even if it's just them advertising the Battle of the Bay. (I'm think about going this year, seems really fun)

Hampton, CNU and WM could be doing joint degree programs or some other networking. While they are not quite peers, they do seem to attract some quality students. Try and steal some of those kids away from all the Boston Schools and hopefully retain those great minds.

I'd love to see an ODU /EVMS merger, doubt it will happen though. More team work would help both schools though. I think this partnership would help elevate both institutions nationally.

TCC does a hell of a job promoting they they are the 1 ring to rule them all. I don't really see or hear much about Thomas Nelson.

07-coffee3 You forgot Regent University with 9000 students their starting both mens and womens basketball programs, wrestling, volleyball, golf, both mens and womens soccer and track and field within the next 2 years. 07-coffee3

If I put down Regent, then I should put down Virginia Wesleyan.

CNU was included. If you include D3 you have to include Weslyan too. Regent will probably be D3 within a decade.

I think Regent is going D3 now. Their track and field/ cross country schedule has them competing with D3 schools in the state.

I just looked up Regents master plan looks like their adding a ton of sports over the next few years.

• Men’s & Women’s Volleyball – 2018
• Men’s & Women’s Soccer – 2018
• Men’s & Women’s Basketball – 2019
• Wrestling – 2019
• Men's & Women's Golf – 2020

Regent is in the early development stage of building a state-of-the-art 40-acre athletic complex with NCAA-certified courts and modern facilities.
• Soccer Field
• Football Field
• Tennis Courts
• Track
• Softball Field
• Baseball Field
• Lacrosse Field
• Basketball Field House
• Volleyball Courts
• Track
• Wrestling Gym
• Rock Climbing Wall Gym
• Boxing Ring Gym
• Fitness & Weight Training Equipment

Right now they're members of the NCCAA, which doesn't preclude dual membership in the NCAA or NAIA. With few NCCAA and NAIA members nearby, they almost have to aim for D3. Guessing the aim would be membership in USA South, because I can't imagine the ODAC taking a new program. Maybe the Capital, which has four Virginia schools (including CNU) and Salisbury.

Do they have a mascot yet? I'm guessing it'll be something Christian-themed, like Crusaders or Lions.

A mascot is coming soon. Hoping they stay away from Lions. Theres only room for one Big Blue Beast in town. Then again, if we start having to worry about Regent, ODU is in trouble. Then again part 2, I never thought Id see the day we'd have Liberty nipping at our heels either.

You wait and see. The VB deal will fall thru and Norfolk will once again come out on top. Hope they expand to 18-20,000

That would be ideal. Scope is far and away the best location in Hampton Roads for an arena.

I worked in the Admin bldg. Rhamstine is a good guy. I'm not sure how they expand it since it is a hole in the ground attached to an underground parking garage, is closed in on 3 sides by streets, and the top is essentially a stone Roman arch.
The place is very interesting.... so many out of the way nooks and closets. I once opened a door and walked into this small room that had tons of Virginia Squires flags and memorabilia.

I'm highly doubtful about expanding Scope to NBA/NHL capacity, much less quality. If this was even a remote option, wouldn't it have come up during the attempts over the past 20 years to put a team in Norfolk?

Looks like it's coming Friday; the school has a pressed at 6 pm to announce a logo and nickname.

I envision they would dig down and out. The dome shape is not moving, so the way to deal with that and get optimal capacity is you would actually have an overhang of seating to 'stack' the seats. I drew a picture. Let's see if I can figure out how to attach it.

Edit: napkin image attached?

Wouldn't you also have to alter the old "upper deck" so that it's pointing more towards the court? Sight lines would be kinda mangled if they kept the same orientation as they currently have.

Yeah I think the upper deck would have to be steeper than I drew it, or the overhang would have to be shorter. Either way, all new seats and a really expensive project

I applaud your ingenuity but going deeper triggers huge groundwater concerns. I think it would be a showstopper.

I think of they did it they would have to completely rebuild the interior. The current bowl design is outdated, and just adding on to it would do nothing but take a small third rate arena and make it a large third rate arena.

Here is a link to the May, 17 Inside Business (VP) article which states that the plan is to dig down to add seating, and to entirely gut the old arena of it's current seating.

RE: Virginia Beach arena update
First off I’m not an architect or an engineer so none of this may be possible or practical. I have however spent way too much time in Scope between Admirals, ODU, and Nighthawks games. It seems to me if they dug down a bit and then relocated the interior concourse stuff (bathrooms and concessions) to new locations on the exterior of the concourse it would free up enough space to rework the seating bowls to up the capacity, remove the abundance of wasted space at the ends down low, and maybe squeeze some suites in. Even if this is possible I don’t see a rebuilt Scope having a hockey/basketball capacity of more than 13,000/15,000. That’s smallish for a NCAA 1st/2nd Round and too small for NHL or NBA relocation. The other problem with this is Scope would probably be offline for a year or two.

Norfolk has talked the people that have proposed pushing the concessions out before:

Not bad, figured they would play off Regent, though I was hoping for something more unique. UCSC are the Banana Slugs. Sounds sorta lame, but IMO it's pretty bad ass, AND it sure is one of a kind.
