The South Florida Bulls will hire Brian Gregory as the team’s next head basketball coach, sources told FanRag Sports.

Gregory started his coaching career as an assistant with the Michigan State Spartans. During the five seasons he was an assistant with Michigan State, the Spartans went to the Final Four three times and won the NCAA Tournament.

In 2003, Gregory got his first head coaching gig. It was as the head coach of the Dayton Flyers. As Flyers head coach, he led the team to the 2004 and the 2009 NCAA Tournament. During the 2009-10 college basketball season, he led Dayton to become the postseason NIT champions after beating North Carolina.

He would then become the head coach of Georgia Tech — basketball program that was on probation when he first got there.

His last season with Georgia Tech was actually his best with the program. After winning 21 games during the 2015-16 season he would not return. But it is worth noting he brought Ben Lammers, Quinton Stephens and Josh Okogie to the program, all who excelled this season for Josh Pastner.

Gregory will bring 13 years of head coaching experience with him to South Florida. The Bulls went 7-23 during the 2016-17 season.

lol looks like the bulls arent getting out of the cellar anytime soon. IMO they should have taken a second look at Bartow but I guess everyone rightfully wanted a clean slate.

I read akron head coach declined the job offer and Pitino wanted the job but wanted more $$ and a new staff overhaul but usf wasn't up for that. Seems like a bargain hire, hopefully for the league he can succeed a bit.

Obviously USF fans want more, but I'd be happy if he gets them consistently in the 100-150 range. Really that's all I need from them, Tulane and ECU.

That maybe all you want from ECU but I want more like playing in the NCAA tournament every year.

Memphis fires Josh Pastner, Georgia Tech fires Brian Gregory.
Georgia Tech hires Josh Pastner,
USF hires Brian Gregory.

It feels almost incestual.

Just shows the progression willing to be made...Memphis fires a coach they deem is not good enough. That coach (Pastner) then goes to replace a coach (Gregory) that GT finds is not good enough and fires. USF hires him. USF hired a coach that got replaced by a coach that was fired in this league for not being good enough...I hope the best but fear the worst.

with cincy and Dayton being so close, I kinda followed him a little at UD - was never real impressed with him - hopefully, he's a better coach now than he was then

Good recruiter, terrible coach. His players don't develop, they don't crash the boards, and the defense is mediocre at best.

Of course that's what you want. I'm realistic because I just don't want those teams to be the RPI killers they currently are for the rest of the league.

Just for clairification...Pastner wasn't fired.

I think USF will be mediocre under Gregory. Which will be an improvement.

Bartow seems like a good coach. Problem is, the situation at USF is not simply a 'normal' run of 'being bad'. It's a complete implosion of the program. Investigation, MANY players bailing, players leaving MID SEASON... speaks volumes. Frankly I can't believe it's become this bad... but that's probably why they wanted a clean slate. To call us a project is the understatement of the year... I think it takes years to rebuild.

Brian Gregory has had 6 teams finish with over 20 wins in his 13 years of head coaching... His last 4 season at Dayton were pretty awesome. I think USF could have done far worse than this fell. jmo.

could have also done drastically better

if you think about no AAC team is going to a hire a completely failed coach..on the scale of relatistic hires, this is probably lower on the scale

there are better retreads out there...
