2 Penn St. ex-administrators plead guilty in sex abuse case
"Two former Penn State University administrators each pleaded guilty Monday to a misdemeanor child endangerment charge for his role in the Jerry Sandusky child molestation case, more than five years after the scandal broke.

Ex-Athletic Director Tim Curley and former university Vice President Gary Schultz originally were charged with felonies. The reduced charge is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Penn State ex-President Graham Spanier was also charged in the case. He was not in the Harrisburg courtroom Monday morning, though his attorneys were.

The three handled a 2001 complaint by a graduate assistant who said he saw Sandusky, a retired defensive football coach, sexually abusing a boy in a team shower. They did not report the matter to police or child welfare authorities but told Sandusky he was not allowed to bring children to the campus.

Sandusky was not arrested until a decade later. He was convicted in 2012 of 45 counts of sexual abuse of 10 boys, and is serving a 30- to 60-year state prison term.

Shortly after Sandusky's arrest, Hall of Fame football coach Joe Paterno was fired.

Schultz and Curley were arrested in 2011, and Spanier in 2012."

"Penn State's costs related to the Sandusky scandal are approaching a quarter-billion dollars.

The scandal's overall cost to the school includes a recent $12 million verdict in the whistleblower and defamation case brought by former assistant coach Mike McQueary, the ex-graduate assistant whose testimony helped convict Sandusky in 2012.

The university has settled with 33 people over allegations they were sexually abused by Sandusky, and has made total payments to them of $93 million.

The NCAA also levied a $48 million penalty against the university that is now funding anti-child-abuse efforts in Pennsylvania."

Oh, no. Now the federal court system is also in on the conspiracy to smear Joe's legacy. When will this tragedy end?

If crimes were committed, and evidence sufficient to prove the cases beyond reasonable doubt, then lock them up! That's why we have laws and law enforcement. That's the correct path to take in cases of crimes.

And it's a great showing of good will that Penn St voluntarily gave $48million to help support anti-child abuse programs in the state.

I wish I could have bet on this. Fully predictable action by Schultz and Curley. Their acolytes talked a good game as regards their innocence for 5 years, but when it was "go time" (the trial was set to begin in a mere 7 days), of course they changed their minds. Plead guilty and take a reduced charge .....

Ball's in Spanier's court now, I guess. He's gotta be nervous.

There was no such thing, I think you know that too.

The NCAA tried to force Penn St to pay it a penalty, but rather than be embarrassed in court, it "allowed" Penn St to give that money towards funding anti-child abuse programs in PA.

Nice try, NCAA.

LOL!

A Louisville fan striking the "High and Mighty" pose.

Louisville wouldn't know the "Moral High Road" if they tripped and fell on their face in the middle of it. But as for the "Scumbags everywhere!" thing, I have no doubt Louisville and their fans are used to seeing those.

He's toast.

And he is a real scumbag. I wonder if his ego is so large he'll release a statement trying to justify anything he's done. It's easy to roll on college bureaucracy, but, that can't save you. And it's easy to roll on the boosters and politicians who'd have him out of there on a rail if he'd had a spine and ripped out Paterno and the athletic administrators sooner. And that's what that guy did well at Penn State: roll on others. Hey, have a problem with tuition hikes year after year? Don't hate me and how I ran the books...blame your state politicians!

I was never a Spanier fan ... never, not even from Day 1 of his Presidency (I was an undergrad when Spanier replaced the previous President, Joab Thomas).

Spanier is NOT a stand-up guy. You are correct about tuition hikes. Penn State's tuition was sky-high (which should not be the case given the inherent mission of land grant institutions), but he ALWAYS blamed it on Harrisburg. Always.

A Cincy student-athlete committed a crime. He didn't rape children, but it was a crime nonetheless.

Therefore, the appropriate thing to do would be to shut down UCincy athletics for some period of time, perhaps a few months.

Makes sense, right?

Curley was I believe the one who kept a file on Sandusky. Schultz was in charge of the police department and didn't report the crime. They both had almost no chance of getting out of this. With Spanier, it isn't as clear cut.

If there was a conspiracy by the administration of the college, the coaching staff of the college and or the Police department of the college to cover up the crime to protect the sport of the student athlete then absolutely they should the sport down and probably the entire athletic department.

A basketball player shoplifted a magazine, the AD talked to the head of the police dept to have the citation squashed ... and you want to shut the bball team or maybe the entire dept down??

No one will agree with you.

If you want to equate a man given free access to PSU going around raping children to a player shoplifting a magazine, more power to you.

Whenever rape and sexual assault is brought up here, you seem to rush in to defend the alleged criminal and/or enabler/obstructor (PSU, Baylor, etc.). At least, it seems that way.

Why is that?

Beyond question, shoplifting a magazine is not equivalent to sexually assaulting children.

It appeared, from his previous post, that he thought shutting down the sport or AD was an appropriate response to any crime being committed by a student athlete, so long as there was a cover up.

I have never, and will never, defend a student athlete (or any other person affiliated with a university) who commits a crime.

I will defend the university itself from extraneous punishment, simply because someone or someones who are affiliated with it, commit crime(s).

You'd probably defend Mayor Larry Vaughn...

When the president of the university covers up multiple felonies, yes, the school should be punished more severely than if the president covered up a single shoplifting incident.
