RE: SMU and UCONN Rivalries
I think it's just part of life... It's going to be really hard to have true rivalries in this conference.
To have a true rivalry, you have to have some key ingredients:
-Shared History.
-Competitiveness.
-Similarity.
It also helps to have:
-Geographical proximity.
So...
Shared History: UC has shared history with Memphis (Metro, CUSA), ECU (CUSA), Houston (CUSA), Tulsa (MVC, Metro?), USF (CUSA, BE), and UConn (BE).
Competitiveness: UC has been competitive (in BB) with UConn, Memphis, Temple, and recently SMU.
Similarity: The most "similar" Universities with UC (Large, Public, Research, Urban Universities) are Temple, Houston, Memphis.
and,
Geographical Proximity: None, but Temple is the closest.
There just are no "obvious" rivalries in this conference. Maybe something develops over time...some categories get checked in two categories, but no single institution checks all the boxes. UConn, in particular, has the strongest claim: we have some history with them and the series has been extremely competitive (I think they said we had 19 meetings coming into the game on Saturday and it was 10-9 favoring UC with something like 20 points separating the two schools total...).
But SMU? There's nothing there really to build a rivalry upon at this point. We've only been in the same conference for 4 years, they are a private, parochial school, that's over 1000 miles away. They've only been competitive with us for the past 2 years. We can have great games, but can they really be a "rival"? I doubt it.
