DRC Article: NT Hiring New Basketball Coach
UNT closing in on naming new coach
North Texas is close to hiring a new head coach for its men’s basketball program, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to the Denton Record-Chronicle late Sunday.
The source detailed where the school is in its search process.
UNT has narrowed its field of candidates to two or three coaches, including one who has emerged as the top option.
The school is expected to have its new coach in place by the end of the week and could have a decision finalized within the next two or three days.

Coaching in the Tourney. If the hire is gonna happen in the couple of days then it would seem to eliminate anyone coaching in the tourney.

What's wrong with Ray Harper? I think he is one of the D1 coaches that could end up at North Texas. Do you think Ray would be a bad hire?

WKU may wish they had Harper back if Stansbury runs off after one year on the job. Ive seen his name on just about every opening out there.

Stanz is reportedly building a nice spread off of Scottsville Rd. Non verbal behavior says he's staying (fingers crossed during the next couple of weeks)

Head coaches, yes, but it was unlikely that UNT would be able to land a HC from a tournament team anyway. CUSA is a really bad conference and UNT is one of the worst basketball programs in the conference, so you pretty much have to risk it with an assistant coach hire.

He may turn out to be a good hire for UNT. This hire makes sense since McCasland is from the Dallas area and has almost all of his recruiting ties in and around the Dallas area. Some Arkansas State fans weren't too high on him based on how the season ended, so some of them are probably happy about this.

He accepted the Abilene Christian job and left before coaching there at all. He left us after one year for a lateral job. One good thing for NTU is he is back home. Probably a good coach but like most D1 coaches at our level a hired gun looking for the next gig. Good luck. One thing I like is this is how our football program got back on its feet. Love those coaching searches.

Mixed feelings. Think he would have done a good job moving forward at stAte and can help UNT, but I think there are a lot of guys that fit that mold. $500k buyout. Not huge money but I figure we will cash the check and look for another up and comer. Given our past, I bet our AD kept the file from last year's search.

I'm fine with north texas having to pay the 500k...I assume they would put the same in his deal. If this guy is hired away, it's a win/win for the school. Team is good and we get a buyout...no issues with this hire

Better hope he doesn't come in and load up on 6 JUCO's like he did at ASU. If so it likely means he's looking to do a quick exit. Of course the upside to that...UNT must win for it to happen.
Going strong on JUCO's use to kill a program from sustaining winning seasons. But Kermit for Middle worked it pretty well starting about 6 or 7 seasons ago. And with a 40% transfer rate in college basketball...
most schools are only getting 2 years out of a lot of HS recruits.

Look at what Don Maestri did at Troy with his JUCO recruiting... I'm sure many of you UNT, MT, and WKU fans remember that very well. And Troy paid the price for it. It took Cunningham 4 full years to finally clean that mess up.
Better hope McCasland doesn't pull that crap.

There's some buyers beware here. While this years team had current flaws that were certainly not his fault, we collapsed at the end of the year...plain and simple. Went from 18-6 to 20-12. He's not a particularly amazing in game coach. There was nothing spectacular other than him getting a team to play together. Players like him.
He will not blame his players for anything...at all. He blamed himself for all 12 losses. We heard 12 times "I have to do a better job coaching" It got old at the end. My biggest concern is that our shot selection at the end of the year was horrible, and once teams figured out how to deal with our offense, he made no attempt to change anything. Another concern is that we went from a Top 50 Free Throw shooting team nationally to one of the 20 worst teams in the country, and we lost basically one player in that span.
I think many of us felt the last few weeks that he didn't have the same energy he had a few weeks ago. Almost like he had decided to leave, and wasn't putting up the same effort overall. It showed in recruiting too, only picking up 1 Spring Commitment, who immediately left right after this came out.
