RE: Official Game Thread: NCAA Tournament vs Florida
FLORIDA 24-8; 14-4; currently on a 2 game losing streak, both to Vandy
I haven't seen these guys play so will only point out some facts on the record.
We have 3 common opponents: they beat UT 83-70 on January 7 at home. We didn't. They also beat Mississippi State 57-52 February 18 on the road in Starkville. They beat Mercer by 22, 76-54, in the Bears first game of the year in Jacksonville. The Bucs beat Mercer by 17 in Johnson City. They beat Mississippi State by 5, we beat them by 2.
They’ve lost all 3 games to Vandy, a team which Chattanooga had beat and blew it at the end. They split with Kentucky, split with South Carolina, lost to Florida State in Tallahassee, to Duke in New York and to Gonzaga at home in Gainesville.
They beat Arkansas twice, and knocked off mid majors Belmont, FCGU and North Florida.
These guys shine on defense. In conference games they hold opponents to .408 FG% (2nd in SEC), to a mere .297 from 3 with 94 makes (5.2 per game) in 18 games (1st in conference on both counts). They are 2nd in the SEC in grabbing steals (7.4) and 3rd in forcing opponents turnovers (14.6). In they end they hold conference opponents to 67.4, 2nd best in conference.
On the offensive end they average 78.3, (4th best in the SEC). 2P% is a middling 6th in SEC .499. 3P% is much better: 2nd at .376 with 8.6 makes. 3 point shooters are guards KeVaughn Allen (.399 with 2.2 makes) and 6-6 Canyon Berry (.347 with 1.3 makes), and forwards Devon Robinson (.389 with 1.2 makes) and Justin Leon (.390 with 1.3 makes). Freshman Guard Eric Hester will make 3’s, but only gets 6.4 minutes in about half the games. Scoring chores get spread around (13.9 to 9.8 among the top 4) without one real “go to” guy.
Rebounds (6th), assists (6th) and turnovers (6th) are middling in the SEC. [EDIT as Runningfool points out 6-11 255 John Egbunu is gone with an ACL, taking away 7.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks - without him the Bucs do not match up badly physically at all. The Gators did not lose him till near the season's end, so these stats probably do not reflect the current abilities of the team that well. Runningfool also says that Canyon Barry is struggling with ankle problems.]
Boy would I like to see the Bucs attack with the energy we showed the second half against UNCG! I would bet good money on those Bucs.
