The Future of ASN
http://www.herdfans.com/12thman/index.php?topic=96021.0

"As for ASN.............it isn't going dark, they are "rebooting" the Network with new and FRESH management........ASN had a chance to be something new and something different over the air.........should have been in 100+ million homes by now....former management had NO clue, and that is why they will be gone in just over a week..............New management will take over with Sinclair still the major partner.........changes should all be for the better, but if it doesn't work this time, it will go dark..........I'd suggest they give it 2 more years to make a mark.

Contrary to the Virginia Pilot article with the link posted in another thread, ASN does indeed pay CUSA a rights fee...... very much in line with the rights fees the other partners are paying and certainly larger than the fee they receive from ESPN.

Look for Sinclair to issue a press release sometime next week announcing what the future looks like for ASN..........they should have responded already because all of this negative (and mostly incorrect) publicity is killing them."

If they can rebrand and indeed get in 100+ million over the air homes in HD this could be a very exciting development.

RE: The Future of ASN
I wonder if part of ASN's problem stems from their purchase of espn throwaway inventory. After starting with a contract with C-USA they then contracted with espn to take a number of games off their hands that espn wasn't going to put on tv. May have been too costly and too scattered of an approach.

I don't see their issues as being inventory based. All of ASN's problems stem from their spotty poorly defined footprint. Bottom line for ASN-You cant watch what isn't on the air where you are. Additionally, you cant watch what you cant find even if it is supposedly on the air where you are.

Interesting that C-USA might become a "tentpole" for the entity that replaces ASN. That from Mattsarz tweet. Could C-USA be considering taking ownership or operational control of this syndication entity or just be the focus of it?

This is an opportunity for our conference leadership to setup something very good in regards to tv distribution to make sure our FB and basketball especially, are available on regional sports networks all over the country. If our leadership is just sitting around waiting for the other shoe to drop then the opportunity will be missed.

RE: The Future of ASN
I'd prefer that ASN, or whatever it is/will become, just be done. I'd personally rather pay $10/month for the beIN package to get that level of quality. ASN is/was available in most places, but it's garbage. And their live stream functionality was a joke. Personally, I'd rather CUSA just go to an all-streaming method like the MWC is considering, as long as the streaming partners can bring an above average streaming quality/experience.

RE: The Future of ASN
If we go all streaming, most games will NOT be produced by a 3rd party with money. Most will be produced by the schools themselves; and you'll get what you get. Sometimes graphics and replay...sometimes a spinning Miners logo.

Here in Charlotte ASN was the only exposure the general public had to our team because their broadcasts are available to anyone with an antenna. Streaming is great for hardcore fans but not great for building a fan base.

This would be very good for CUSA and for other G5 conferences. With amount of true cord cutting going on and the re-discovery of OTA TV, G5 conferences could get some good exposure if they can get into a lot of home and perhaps the MW would join in if they can get stations out west. I would be excited about that...even on the sub-channels.

Exactly, the day after the ODU basketball game that was televised on ASN a random guy at the deli started talking about what a great game it was when he saw I was wearing a Charlotte shirt. He said he was channel surfing and came across it.

Streaming is great for all of us die hards, but every program in this conference needs to grow their brand, and OTA is an important component in making that happen.
