I think if you'd ask 10 out of 10 Memphis fans then and now, that 10 out of 10 would consider the hiring of John Calipari as swinging for the fences. I doubt you'd get 1 out of 10 to say the same thing about Tubby Smith or if it had been Steve Fisher or Rollie Massimino.

There is another category that includes experienced coaches given another chance or persuaded to take a new gig. Pearl, Tubby, Dawkins, Barnes - will happen with Crean and Romar too. Heck, Franks Martin and Haith.

Someone wants to spend the time, you could get pretty good analysis on the success rates of "retreads" versus up-comers. I'm not messing with it right now.

I'm just never going to label a fired pro coach returning to college a retread.

To me that word means more about age and college career trajectory.

Donovan or Stevens or Hoiberg won't be retreads if they get fired IMO.

Had UT Arlington on the news. They are running through the NIT.
This is the coach I wished they would have looked at last year.
