100% correct. My biggest fear is that we hire Penny and it doesn't work. It would be much worse than Tubby because he is our icon, but has no college experience coaching.

The positives far outweigh the negatives at this point. He will always be an icon regardless of what happens as a coach. The program is decimated right now. Penny has the #1 high school team in the nation. He is involved with one of the premier AAU programs in the nation.

If the worst case happens, he will still be a hero and icon due to how far we have fallen...it won’t be his fault. But if he succeeds??? He could bring the #1 class in year 1. We could be back contending next year. He would truly be a Memphis hero and icon like no one before him. I say do it

Penny is the home run hire if he can bring the recruits with him

I don't disagree, in the main. And if that's what they do I'm all for it. I simply wish he'd put in some time as a college assistant first, that's all.

I think if you can Tubby Smith after two seasons a lot of coaches won't want the job...I mean, why take a rebuilding job if you're gonna get run off in year two?

We got Preston Laird coming in 10yrs to rebuild the program, we just need a stop gap

Thick skin. That would be qualification #1. And the only likely scenario that would be mutually agreeable for the duration would be someone (like Cal) who is young enough to be considered by a better program if he had success here. Finch stayed here a long time, since he was "one of our own," had some success . . . and then didn't . . . and the fans turned on him. Nothing I've seen about basketball fans makes me think we have the "through thick and thin" potential here. Not how we roll.

Everyone talks about recruiting, but the Saul and Tubby dynamic, along with PoohParasite and BAMguy has got to be one of the weirdest coaching teams ever assembled.

If I were Dr. Rudd/Bowen, I would insert a mole into practices, or put cameras in there. I ain't kidding. lol.

Something ain't right with that team.

it's not possible to do worse than tubby. Just say you keep tubby. Does Saul and GG and Brian have soon to be college age sons?

If so, there's your future. They will be starters on whatever team tubby is coaching.
