I have no idea whether it made sense financially on a one-off basis (ie, whether BYU recouped $800K from the difference in ticket sales for a 1:30pm v. 8:30pm kickoff in November), but I do know that most BYU fans were immensely grateful for the earlier daytime kickoffs in November and BYU has gained a ton of goodwill with season ticket holders and East Coast alumni and fans from these decisions.

Good for them, and I agree that was a good decision. ESPNU is not the answer.

Thanks for this example.

I think it could make sense, in a one-off context.

The harder question of course is does it make sense in the context of an entire TV deal for a conference with 12 teams.

(ie saber rattling)

So you suggesting the mwc tear up current contract while espn have no say in the matter and simply agree with mwc demands b/c said unhappy league just figure out they aren't making enough $$$?!? Ok

No. Their talking about their next deal. Thier current deal comes up for renewal at the same time as the AAC.

RE: mwc to consider cutting the cord
The only way selling games of your choosing works is if you negotiate a contract using the framework of the old NCAA and CFA deals. ESPN has holes to fill and they want some assurance of certain level of interest.

Get the G5 or some portion thereof to go together for a "rate card" type deal then you might make it viable but that is inefficient although less inefficient than ESPN getting calls from 40 schools touting their willingness to kick at 10pm eastern on Saturday night.
