I'm not sure if that was true - is true, but it might be.

NYU dropped football in1953 and basketball in 1971. The remaining sports with the exception of fencing were moved from D1 to D3 in 1981. Basketball was resumed as a D3 sport in 1983.

Here is an interesting historic fact:

Quote:In the 1940 season, before a football game between NYU and Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, 2,000 NYU students protested against the "gentlemen's agreement" to exclude African-American athletes (at the University of Missouri's request). At the time, it was the largest protest ever against this practice.

They used to have sports. My ex-wife played a year of Soccer there in the mid 90's, it was Ricks or whatever then. I think BYU changed the name. They had a tight end there who eventually played in the NFL. Honestly one of the best catching Tight Ends I've ever seen.
Cheers!

Metro State is a member of the D2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Roadrunners have won 2 men's basketball national championships and 2 women's soccer national championships.

Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSUD)... "Metro."

The Auraria Higher Education Campus is home to three schools:
Community College of Denver (CCD)
Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSUD)
University of Colorado at Denver (UCD)

They share classroom space, Student Union, etc...

And, just for the Minneapolis Bison guy, the "Of Denver" was added in the late 80's after "Metropolitan State College" in Minneapolis sued the Metropolitan State College that was in Denver over copyright. Seeing as the Denver school was the newer of the two, they lost and had to add the "Denver" to their title as a result.

We also got sued by Warner Brothers because our mascot (the Roadrunner) was...ah...similar...to their cartoon. And it really was...but we had to drop the cartoony version for a different rendition.

Good on them.

I generally like NYU, but now I like them more than I did.

Speaking of Minnesota's Metro State, they offer no sports whatsoever(intercollegiate, club, intramural). They have more than 10,000 students(will look up actual size soon.)

Their goal is to add football and join FBS. I posted an article about them in my thread about schools adding football and who could be next.

Thanks for the correction. The CUD Wikipedia pages just says 18k.

IMO the two campuses should be separate within the CU system. They carry out completely different missions and aren't located near each other.

That's how they handle University of Arkansas Medical Sciences (med school and health professions ranging from certifications, associates, bachelor's, masters, PhD, and MD) and Arkansas-Little Rock. They are less than four miles apart and come July 1, Pulaski Tech joins the UA system and while primarily in North Little Rock they have a campus in Little Rock as well. Each has it's own top administrator who reports to the system president.

RE: Largest school with no intercollegiate sports.
If you go with the largest schools without football? Here they are.
Grand Canyon U. 55,000 +
NYU 44,000 + They still have D1 Fencing for both men and women.
FUllerton State 38,000 + I could see them adding football with a large alumni base and student body.
Northridge State 38,000 + Another one that might be able to sustain football.
Long Beach State 35,000 + They seemed to be inclined to add football as well.

UTRGV is also with 28,000 + could start one soon. I could see schools with large student body and all that could ramped up sports in the future.
Simmons in Kentucky just starting sports. University of Hawaii-West Oahu also starting adding sports like basketball. University of Fort Lauderdale is ramping up their sports.

University of Alaska Southeast, Sheldon State and Alaska Pacific shut down their athletic department in 1990. All three schools faced a drop of enrollment. Dropping sports hurt school spirit.

University of Texas A&M-Central Texas just started sports on their campus. They are also gunning for D1 inclusion.

But, if you want to look at schools with no sports for varsity play? You have to look at the Community Colleges. Some of them are over 100,000 students and do not have a varsity sports program in the NJCAA or the California JC leagues.

IIRC, Minnesota's "Metro State" was designed for non-traditional students, with the explicit idea of not including things they didn't need (like athletics). But, in more recent years they're starting to move to a more traditional, comprehensive model. Perhaps athletics will follow in the future.

Wikipedia says 11,580 enrollment and cites a 2014 MnSCU source.

Indeed. No idea why Boulder drove to have CU "Medical" and CU Denver combine into a single university.

Moreover, not sure why Boulder wouldn't just want to fold the medical/health science work into the Boulder campus, to pump up research numbers even higher. They each do around $4xx M research expenditures per year, and the combined $8xx M would be one of the tops in the PAC.

Yeah, City College and several other CUNY schools have their own DIII athletics conference.

It's a little crazy to me, considering how ridiculous NYC real estate is, how many universities, even just on the island of Manhattan but fairly including others in Bronx and Brooklyn, have on campus athletics facilities.

You think about: NYU, Columbia, City College, Fordham, LIU Brooklyn, probably others I'm missing off the top of my head.

Manhattan is pretty constrained but the rest of NYC has more than enough room for most anything else. Queens and Staten Island especially have outright suburbs or so I've read. Plus, there are even more schools just across the river in New Jersey.

UT-Arlington has been growing quite a bit recently and are now about 42,000 students on campus, and estimating about 57,000 globally.

UT-Arlington, of course, does not have football. Really wish they would get the ball rolling on that. They're adding women's golf next year even though they were already title-9 compliant. It's not too much of a reach to think they add another women's sport along with football in the not to distant future.

BYU-Idaho Enrollment

As of right now, Winter Semester 2017, there are 21K on campus plus a little under 10K online. However, full-time on-campus students is only 15K.

They are building like crazy in Rexburg to continue to increase the full-time on-campus enrollment. Also, BYU-Idaho will administer the new BYU-Pathways program, so the number of online students will likely skyrocket.

When it used to be called Ricks College, the school had a competitive and often nationally-ranked JC football program (the Vikings). Many BYU players began their college careers at Ricks, including Jason Buck (Outland Trophy winner) and some current BYU coaching staff.

The school discontinued intercollegiate sports to focus on intramural competition when the school upgraded to a university and massively increased its enrollment and changed its name to BYU-Idaho...about 15 years ago.

RE: Largest school with no intercollegiate sports.
I don't really think online students should count for this type of thing. Yes, they are students - but they're not nearly as likely to be supportive of the athletic department. I don't have any research to back that up, but I think most of us probably agree that online students are less likely to attend games or watch the teams on TV or buy jerseys, etc. Number of students on campus, especially those living in dorms and not commuting, are more likely to be the ones in the stands and buying gear.

I think any school that has 15,000 (maybe even only 10,000) on campus students and doesn't have an athletic department should really look into starting one. Athletic departments are great advertisers for the school and provide a students much needed breaks from studies and help build teamwork and community pride, and help bring in much needed donations. Some schools that are heavy on research and perhaps specialize in Masters/Doctoral degrees instead of undergrad studies could probably do without an athletic department, but I don't think there are many like that above the 10-15k enrollment mark.

Schools in certain areas of the country should also sponsor specific sports once they reach a large enough enrollment. I'd expect any university in Minnesota with 10k+ students to offer hockey for example, just like I'd expect schools in Texas to offer football.

Schools like the University of Phoenix just don't have the same ability to sponsor athletics. Their students are all over the country, there's no real central location where students live on campus. They have 91 different campuses, I can't seem to find how many students are at their main campus. I don't believe there is any on-campus housing either.

Liberty and Grand Canyon do have pretty decent size campuses, so even though have huge online enrollments, they have enough on-campus students to support an athletic department.

Well like I mentioned earlier in this thread, the Minnesota "Metro State U" (not the Colorado one) was started as a school specifically for non-traditional students, meaning that "extraneous" things like athletics weren't included.

But that is changing now, for that school. So maybe they will look to add athletics in the future.
