the author must also work on MSNBC,, fake news
MOB never did the Nazi salute in Collie Station
but it IS a good story
That struck me, too.
Considering he's 31, it can only be a few games. I was there in 1988 and 1990 (when he was 4 and 6), and it didn't happen then. So it had to be 92 or 94, but I doubt that would have been the case. It would have been booed, and it would have made the news (given the history between the schools). The 92 show in the archives shows it was loved and a huge hit (and reading script, I can see why), so that wasn't it. The 94 show went nowhere near that theme.

RE: Some good publicity for Rice
The Rice student section did perform the Nazi salute during the A&M band's performance, but this was at Rice Stadium, in the 92-94 time period. I was there, and the Campanile has a photo of the student section performing the salute. (If I'm not too lazy, I'll take a photo of the photo.)
I seem to recall some angry letters to the editor in the following week's Thresher (primarily from A&M alums), and I want to say I recall a Rice student's editorial in the Thresher a few weeks later (responding to the Aggie complaints, which almost always mentioned A&M's history and traditions) that featured the line, "Neither I nor a billion people in China give a flying f-ck about Aggie tradition." Something along those lines.

On page 10 of the Jan. 11, 1994, Thresher is a "Beyond the Hedges" roundup of the incident, which occurred during the halftime of Rice's Homecoming game on Oct. 23, 1993:

A 'Sieg Heil' salute from Rice students to the Texas A&M University band during Rice's Homecoming game on Oct. 23, 1993, sparked arguments among Rice students about the propriety of that action.
Mitchell Istre, with the Rice Office of Computing Services, wrote a letter to A&M's student newspaper, apologizing for the actions of the Rice students.
In the letter published by The Battalion, Istre said, "At first I thought (Rice students) were doing a military salute. Then I realized they were doing the "Sieg Heil' salute. I was aghast"
He also said that the salute was inappropriate because many former A&M students served with distinction in World War II.
"Knowing that this salute is a symbol of hatred and racism, I thought it was totally out of line," Istre said. "(Rice students) don't regard the Corps as anything more than an ROTC unit. They don't realize these guys have made a commitment to the military."
Rice Student Association President Julia Faraham told The Battalion that Rice students acted "all in fun. No one takes anything too seriously around here. Sarcasm is very big on this campus."
The Rice Thresher published a letter from Trey Duhon, A&M Class of '92, in which Duhon said, "I can understand much of the rivalry between our schools. But calling an American military band 'Nazis' goes beyond way too far." He also said the actions of the Rice students lacked class.
In response to this letter, Sid Richardson College senior Chris Thomas wrote a column in the Thresher, saying, "Our salute to the Aggie Band was one of mockery. We sought to ridicule the Corps band for what it was: a bunch of wanna-be-soldiers, brainwashed by the honor of submitting to a hierarchical system that offers little in the way of personal individuality."
Thomas also said in his column that the salute was not meant to be taken literally.
"Our use of irony to ridicule the Corps band does not imply that the Aggie cadets have ever massacred millions of Jews. We do not suggest that the Aggie Corps will invade Poland at anytime in the near future," he said.
The game story, in the Oct. 29, 1993, Thresher (page 14), makes no mention of the incident.
The Aggie alum's letter was in the Nov. 5 issue (page 2).
Thomas' letter was on page 2 of the N ov. 11, 1993, issue.

My how times have changed. If such happened today, people would be scrambling to find safe spaces.
