6pm Saturday: Katie Jenson in the 3,000m finals of the 2017 NCAA Indoor T&F meet
Tonight at 6 p.m. (Central time) in College Station, Rice record-holder Katie Jensen will compete in the 3,000-meter finals of the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Katie has the 8th fastest qualifying time (9:05.66), only 4.45 seconds slower than the best of the 16 finalists. With just 6.01 seconds separating the first and 16th qualifying times, this race is wide open.

Here's a link to Adam Coleman's article on Katie in Friday's Houston Chronicle: http://www.chron.com/sports/rice/article...994014.php

(For comparison, the Oregonian's Friday article about the meet has 231 comments! http://www.oregonlive.com/trackandfield/...ack_a.html )

Here's a link to the Riceowls.com article about Katie's record-breaking qualifying run at the Boston University Last Chance Meet a couple of weeks ago: http://www.riceowls.com/sports/w-track/s...17aaa.html

Best of luck to her today. She's already assured of being all-American I believe (top 8 should be 1st team and second 8 should be 2nd team?).

I would think Karissa Schweizer of Missouri is the favorite. She was the NCAA Cross Country champion in the fall and won the 5000 yesterday in College Station with a pretty impressive time (15:19.14).

I wonder what happened. She has run <9:10 before. Anyway, congratulations to an All American. Maybe next year will be even better.

OldOwl - I believe it was hinted that she was paced in that other, open race, which usually helps with getting the qualifying time she needed. In a more tactical race like this, anything can happen, and you usually won't hit your best time for the season. That's still a great result, with another year to go.
