RE: CA- Tigers out with a Whimper
While I think the laughing comments were overblown, and fairly typical of Nasal when he wants to make a point, instead of actually trying to see what the point is, the effort and passion was clearly lacking.
And if it was not lacking, from the coaches or the kids, it looked like it was lacking, and that is about as bad.
Team went 19-15 last year, 18-14 the year before. This year ended at 19-13. So in raw terms it was a mild improvement, but the epic late season collapse, not losing the games but failing to compete many times, makes it feel even worse. The 2015 team ended in a heartbreaker to Temple, after Nichols got hurt late.
The 2016 team rallied to beat tourney bound Tulsa twice late in the season and made a run to the AAC finals, in spite of losing starter Avery Woodson in the first game of the tourney.
This team was destroyed by SMU, then followed that up with another painful effort.
So three straight, for Memphis standards, mediocre seasons. This one particularly painful because a month ago this team was hanging in there with a good 18-7 record which included several fairly nice wins, even if there was nothing earth shattering.
The at Tulsa loss this year was an odd one, not in terms of the team losing the game late, but losing it late looking like they actually gave up. Same thing happened at UConn, where even while up ten, the team looked lost.
Weird very lengthy dry spells at home against Temple and Houston made even decent efforts given later in those games not enough.
We get it. I get it, but Tubby's biggest two recruiting jobs in the offseason are, first, Dedric, and second, his own energy level. An engaged team with the kids we have, is likely better than the 18-7 pretty good start. But most of us have never seen a similar collapse, in terms of margins and efforts.
Hell, I remember the 2005 team, they lost way more than expected, but rallied to the DWash misses. Not this year.
