One of Calkins' best articles.

What bothered me the most with this article is the players and coaches insulting our intelligence with these ludicrous, insane comments. Wish I could come up with better adjectives. When someone (let alone a whole team) talks down to the fan base like that, they are, in effect, insulting your intelligence and certainly not showing their fans any respect whatsoever.

I don't believe I've ever seen it so done so blatantly by a college TEAM.

Probably both sets.
Saul would do well to leave and become a head coach at a smaller school.
I do not think this administration will hire another unproven asst coach, even if he is the head coach's son.
Look where that got us before. If Saul proves himself, then he can apply for HC.

Yep, it leaves you with two possibilities. Either all that crap about not quitting was just that -- a load of crap -- or that was the least talented group of basketball players ever assembled. I'm gonna pick #1, and hope that "awkward" situation gets resolved in a way that works best for our team . . . hopefully sooner rather than later. If Tubby's to blame, get rid of him. Pay the money. But if the Lawson's are responsible for that heartless, gutless effort to finish the year, get rid of Keelon. Junior, too, if he doesn't like it or was a part of it.

I agree. They either quit or they are really bad at basketball.

Who quit first?

The Coach or the players? Did one player quit and then the others caught the bug?

Maybe it was a perfectly timed orgasmic quitting of biblical proportions on everyone's part. ****.

I'm not sure which one I'd rather it be...... neither is good.

Does this look like a team that meant those comments that were posted in the CA? #demoralized

RE: CA- Tigers out with a Whimper
I've played in a lot of games. Been in a lot of games where we gave our all. It was ALWAYS a humiliating feeling whenever our team lost big, regardless of how hard and how well we played. I don't know what's going on with Tubby's team but the comments some of our players made after that UCF game put them in a light where they are just not worthy of wearing the Memphis name on their jerseys.

I've never lost respect for a group of guys that played on our Tigers team...until today.

The tailspin happened when players began openly discussing their 'professional' options during the season and when a certain family began the 'where the next son will play' public auction.

Cut the cancer.

Some of the responses on this thread are bizarro. Tubby owns this lock, stock and barrel. This is on him, his staff and the players who quit. Period.

Until I hear every side of this, I don't blame collapses of epic proportions on teenagers.
Adults are supposed to be in control and leading the team.

I would have stood up and thrown chairs if needed...lol.
Throwing chairs onto the court is a sign of good old fashioned leadership.

Tubby did 0.

Some of y'all seem to be leaning in the direction of shocking news that is yet to be made public....like we have to get rid of all the Lawsons...so Tubby can manage the team better. You remind me of pre-damage control spinning.

If we have to get rid of primo, nationally touted players, just so a million dollar HOF coach can manage players, then we are truly effed.

This is true. I get the impression from Tubby's words that he is not happy with the 'arrangement'. Lets see if he fixes it.

He needs to go get basketball players who want to be at Memphis because they want to be there.

The lack of effort and self motivation was so lacking the last 2 games, Len Elmore was even commenting on it.

Tubby has to find a way to stoke the fire. He didn't seem able to.

IMHO, The ability to motivate teenagers is a big part of his job, 2nd only to recruiting. And probably the toughest part.

Tubby is experienced and seasoned at doing just that. What went wrong?

RE: CA- Tigers out with a Whimper
While I think the laughing comments were overblown, and fairly typical of Nasal when he wants to make a point, instead of actually trying to see what the point is, the effort and passion was clearly lacking.

And if it was not lacking, from the coaches or the kids, it looked like it was lacking, and that is about as bad.

Team went 19-15 last year, 18-14 the year before. This year ended at 19-13. So in raw terms it was a mild improvement, but the epic late season collapse, not losing the games but failing to compete many times, makes it feel even worse. The 2015 team ended in a heartbreaker to Temple, after Nichols got hurt late.

The 2016 team rallied to beat tourney bound Tulsa twice late in the season and made a run to the AAC finals, in spite of losing starter Avery Woodson in the first game of the tourney.

This team was destroyed by SMU, then followed that up with another painful effort.

So three straight, for Memphis standards, mediocre seasons. This one particularly painful because a month ago this team was hanging in there with a good 18-7 record which included several fairly nice wins, even if there was nothing earth shattering.

The at Tulsa loss this year was an odd one, not in terms of the team losing the game late, but losing it late looking like they actually gave up. Same thing happened at UConn, where even while up ten, the team looked lost.

Weird very lengthy dry spells at home against Temple and Houston made even decent efforts given later in those games not enough.

We get it. I get it, but Tubby's biggest two recruiting jobs in the offseason are, first, Dedric, and second, his own energy level. An engaged team with the kids we have, is likely better than the 18-7 pretty good start. But most of us have never seen a similar collapse, in terms of margins and efforts.

Hell, I remember the 2005 team, they lost way more than expected, but rallied to the DWash misses. Not this year.

First, fix the problem. Then, give 'em all white T-shirts to play in till they earn ANY name on there. Tubby, too.

I agree. Take away the name of the front of the jersey until they earn it back.

I'm talking about playing real games without MEMPHIS on the jersey if that's even allowed.
