University of Texas ... wow!
2016 FOOTBALL: 5-7 (3-6); 6-8th place in B12 (tie)
2016-17 BASKETBALL: 11-22 (4-14); 10th place in B12

Given how much money UTexas has, and given where the Horns are located, being THAT bad is actually pretty impressive. I know it's just one year, and they will be back. But it's still an awful showing.

If you're a fan of a school on the outside looking in at the mountains of cash that "elite" level AD's make, then you can clearly take comfort in knowing that the grass isn't always greener in the other side ... at least not in Texas. Sometimes it's ... well ... burnt orange.

Has Texas ever finished dead last in hoops? They hadn't lost to Kansas in football either since WWII or whatever.

How about Texas and Oklahoma finishing last and second-to-last? Mad props to the BXII.

The fall of Shaka Smart is absolutely stunning. No tourney wins in 5 years come next March.

Baseball team is "only" 9-6 to start the season. 5 of their 6 losses may have been to quality opponents though - 3 vs Stanford and 2 vs Rice (Rice is typically a really good baseball team, but is only 4-10 to start this season)

Don't get me wrong, wads of cash is an advantage over not having wads of cash but it's relative.

Back in the mid 90s-00 UTs money was a huge advantage because they were the only ones in the region spending ridiculous levels of money on athletics in order to offer essentially a pro-level experience while everyone else was still offering only a slightly better than what you came from in HS experience as far as facilities and amenities across all sports and coaching salaries. In that environment, Mack Brown didn't have to recruit, he could just gather.

But today, everybody has pro level facilities and amenities and everyone is chasing the elusive big winner coaches with piles of cash and even mighty UT has to compete for its football players with the likes of Baylor and TCU (unimaginable just a few years ago) instead of just sending out a packet to the kids they want.

That statement applies to pro sports also, in addition to college athletics. Yankees have spent great gobs of $ but haveni't won a world series since 2000. Chicago BUlls have spent big $ since 1998 but not come close to another NBA title without Jordan & Pippen.

Well of course here is the obvious thing: you can't buy players.

You can only buy coaches, and hope they can get the players they need.
