I think today (Friday) is going to be a huge crowd. You have the "hometown" teams (Akron and Kent) both playing. You have Ohio, which always travels well and has a huge alumni base in Cleveland. Then, you have a Ball State team that seems to have had a huge uptick in attendance this year, and it is the first time they've been in the semifinals in a while.

Does anybody know what the record is for the semis (which if the matchups are right, seem to draw more than the finals due to having four vs. two teams)?

I would think the 2007 semifinals has to have the record. You had Akron-Kent in one game and Ohio-Miami in the other. IIR, there was 18,000-plus. ... and 14,000 plus the next night for Akron-Miami.

If Ball State brings 3,000-4,000, this year may be able to approach that.

For the finals, as long as Akron wins, I think the finals is a sure bet to draw 12,000 and could approach 14-15,000.

RE: Weekend crowds will be
I'd be shocked if Ball State has 3000-4000 at the game. Muncie is 4 1/2 hours away and Indianapolis is 5+ hours away. I can't imagine they have a large alumni presence in NEO and committing to that kind of road trip last minute is asking a lot.

The attendance dream semifinal would probably be Toledo, Ohio, Kent, and Akron all making it.

RE: Weekend crowds will be
The highest attendance for the MAC finals was 14K and the MAC semis was 13K

Yesterday with Akron, Kent and Ohio it was 6K

I don't know what happened to all the MAC fans etc- I went last night with some former work friends- but for the most part there were no casual fans in attendance. This event has dramatically gone downhill over the last 10 years in attendance

TV.

In those days, only the final was on TV. Now you can stream even the Monday games to your big flatscreen. It is so much easier than driving an hour or 3 to downtown Cleveland and all the associated expense. The tourney started out as a pretty exciting arena event. Now it's a TV event like all the other conference tourneys and arena attendance is down all over.

No doubt something gets lost in translation. The Q just isn't as electric as it used to be even with optimal teams playing who bring numbers. Not as many want the hassle.

I'd expect a lot more Akron fans to attend tonight's game. You have to remember they moved the start times up so that the first game started at 5:30 when in years past it was 6:30-7:00.

Where were the Kent fans last night? They had the better time slot by far, but I didn't see very many of them.

Kent drive, Kent park, Kent State.

How much does it cost the MAC to rent the arena for seven games for both the men and women? I wonder if just playing the semis and finals at the Q would make Cleveland more special and save some money in the process.

It would be rented by the day and I suspect Gilbert would have cut the MAC a deal. With the casino and other properties he owns downtown, it makes sense for him to want to attract thousands of people downtown.

Kents crowd was horrible. I was shocked at how few fans were there. Ball States crowd was tiny but at least there is a little bit of an excuse since the game started at 5:30 and the school and main alumni areas are 4-5 hours away. Kent does not get a pass since its campus is in Clevelands back yard. I was hoping for a bigger Ohio crowd but it wasn't bad. Would have been much bigger tonight although with OU being on spring break I'm not really sure of the impact that would have had.

3 minutes left. Kent State needs to consider chewing some clock and not rushing shots anymore.

6-seed Kent State wins.

Didn't have a horse in this game, but it's gotta hurt to have a regular season record like that, get to the Final and lose.

Great game and congrats to Kent State!

Akron starters leave the floor without shaking hands. Classless.

To be fair despite being the 6th seed you have to remember KSU had the same record as the two seed. Also they went 9-1 after losing to Toledo a while back I believe. They beat all the best teams at least once since then that they played and sometimes twice.

I do not know what the coach did after that loss but it was clearly what the doctor ordered. Perhaps they needed to be pushed to the wall to get it into them?

If luck was an actual commodity I think Akron spent too much of it earlier in the year with all the really close wins where Kent had all those really close losses (as if it was something you could control anyway).

Teams are instructed by the conference to go to dressing room to begin postgame pressers. Same thing was done in women's game today. Not that I agree with it but...

Meanwhile ESPN does a five-minute interview of Joe Lunardi during the middle of the second half. 03-puke

Money-wise and in every other way, ESPN does zero favors for the MAC in hoops. Give the CBS Sports Network an exclusive contract. They are the true professionals.

not true.

You are right they were the same before the last game of the season. I think I just blocked out that game. Still the important part is that Kent had a record that was right where the other high seeds were.
