Dude is clearly a troll that can't keep to one message. Is this an article about UAB Alumni, Birmingham residents, students, C-USA, or millennials and their voting/living habits?

Well, someone already did the "What's new on Netflix" story on al.com this month so he had to write something

I especially like the part where he insinuates that the 90's were the golden years of UAB Basketball.

He made a good point about the students, the tickets are free and you get a ride to and from the game. The students support has been beyond bad. Marketing by UAB, CUSA the city, legacy arena, uptown and every other venue that could have benefited from more bodies in the seats is bad.
Another reason, if you are like me, and you purchased the game package last year, you felt burnt after UAB first game loss. I purchased the package with the image of finals on my mind. Now most here know, I am a big UAB kool -aid drinking, GLASS IS ALWAYS HALF FULL WHEN IT COMES TO UAB, but I am purchasing tickets one game at a time. I expect a much better crowd tonight, and when we win, an even better crowd Friday and Saturday. Heck, if we keep winning, maybe the students will show up.

This probably comes off sexist even though i'm trying not to sound that way, but i've always wondered if the student attendance is hurt by the fact that only 37% of the student population is male. While plenty of UAB female students love sports (Including my girlfriend) I would say that a larger percent of females aren't into sports when compared to men. I've also noticed that after the team started losing the frats at large have almost completely disappeared from the games.

To clear the matter, yes, it is very sexist.

many of UAB's best student fans are female.

8000 at the first round of the sec tournament. if you watched the game that's a stretch..all conferences are having the same issue. Ours is much more irrelevant from a TV standpoint, which is why we need out ASAP

I see no reason to purchase the package just to watch the other crappy teams play.

It's hard enough watching my own crappy team (at times) play.

It wasn't my intention to question the quality of our female fans just the quantity. The first study i'm linking below found that 2 out of every 3 sports fans are Men. The second link doesn't have the exact percentage of male to female sports fans, but they found that Nascar has the highest Female viewership of all sports with 37% of their total viewers being female..

Study 1
Study 2

I don't think this is necessarily a real "problem" for UAB, I was just think out loud. The number of people wearing Alabama gear in the student section this year has gone up exponentially compared the past few years. I wish they would make not wearing another schools attire a requirement for getting a free student ticket.

Ugh noooooo it isn't sexist. I'm pretty sure he's just making an observation based on what I would assume most people consider to be a universal truth that the number of females that like sports is smaller than the number of males.

MAYBE that isn't true at UAB...

OF COURSE some of UAB's best fans are female.

It isn't sexist for posing the question...

To say that a "larger percent of females aren't into sports when compared to men" is sexist?...my granny's *ss - it's a TRUE statement

PS: Is there a scientific way to determine UAB's "best" fans?

Yes more men are into sports. That's not sexist, it's data driven.

Absolutely. They fought.

Without the ponytails in the first days, and the grown women afterwards, we wouldn't have football or basketball. Bartow Arena would be a giant cold-storage locker for med school cadavers and the Department of French would be limited to only teaching medical terminology.

I saw plenty of female persons yesterday. Fumbles failed to sell the tournament to men, women, trans and indeterminate.

Fumbles, truly. I know you read this board, so pay attention. "Sports marketing" is to marketing as "sports writing" is to writing. Fire the staff and hire someone who knows how to sell events. Events. Not sports.

RE: Fail for Birmingham or UAB?
Any idiot with half a marketing brain could create a decent campaign and sell UAB to Birmingham. I don't know why it's never been done...at the same time I know exactly why it's never been done.

UAB's administration can't sell a product if they don't believe in it...and it sounds like the vast majority of them would rather be selling UAT sports.

My thought has long been sell UAB sports by saying they are Birmingham's teams...UAB has driven 95% of the amazing growth downtown. Sell that fact hard enough and long enough and it becomes perception.

The promotion for anything UAB sports related has long been pitiful...this tournament obviously included.

Selling basketball to Birmingham has always been a hard sell. Only the marketing genius of Gene Bartow could do it and he could only go so far. Birmingham does not like basketball because the ball is round, not oblong. They don't like basketball because knocking someone on their ass is against the rules. They don't like basketball because their favorite team has never been that good at it. They don't like basketball for other reasons that I won't get into.

You don't sell basketball to Birmingham. You sell civic pride. You give crap away. You give them a chance to see their young urchins do something cute at halftime.
