Somehow I don't feel as confident after giving Marshall a warmup game

Yeah it's tough to say how a first round game will effect a team. I think it's safe to say overall playing 4 games as opposed to three will wear a team down and make it harder to win it all but after just one game fatigue won't be as much of an issue yet and like you say, will let them find their groove. Especially important for a team like Marshall. I'd feel better if FAU had pushed them more.

This will be the second meeting between RICE vs UTEP in the CUSA tournament in our 12 years together in the league. Previous meeting was in 2007 in the first round. RICE (10) beat UTEP (7) by three. Prior to joining CUSA, UTEP and RICE competed in the WAC for nine years together. We met in one conference tournament. UTEP (2) beat RICE (3) in the 2005 semifinals. It's strange we have competed in the same conference for 21 years together and this will only the third meeting in the post season conference tournament.

One deciding factor in the previous Rice/UTEP game, a 79-71 UTEP victory, was 3-pt shooting. Rice was 8/29 (27.6%) and UTEP was 9/14 (64.3%). On the season, Rice is shooting 39.0% and UTEP is shooting 34.8%. If both teams had shot at their normal 3-pt percentages, but had taken the same number of shots, that would have resulted in 3 more makes for Rice and 4 fewer makes for UTEP. Rice was a disasterous 1/14 in the 1st half. UTEP obviously has the advantage inside, but Rice needs to shoot better and UTEP needs to shoot a bit worse during this meeting for Rice to close the gap.

I like having the warm up game. Get comfortable in the setting, and get focused. I think ODU and Marshall is a toss up, but id give us an edge just for that 1st game

I think you got the line for UTEP vs RICE backwards.

1st time UAB and La Tech will meet since the bench clearing scuffle in Bartow. Will be interesting to see if there's any spillover effect for tonight's game. Hopefully each team can put it behind them and just focus on basketball. I do expect the refs to be tight with the whistle after the last matchup.

I think this is because UTEP has had the winning basketball tradition Rice aspires to throughout our history together. Before Mike Rhoades, Rice had three years with Arsalan Kazemi, and not a lot of other success.
I see a rivalry ahead across Texas, and really hope to see UTEP home and home in future years. It would also make sense to me to pair UTEP-Rice to make that happen, and put UTSA-North Texas together.
Today, I think MTSU, Rice, Marshall, and Louisiana Tech advance.

I expect to see more playing time for Andrew Drone to try to reduce UTEP's scoring in the paint and maybe help us better defend the UTEP threes.
This should be a closely contested game.

That's generally how it works. If one team made more baskets while the other made less, a lot of results would be different.

Are these refs getting commission for how close they can keep this game. Everytime we extend the league suspect calls.
