Previous meeting was in 2007 in the first round. RICE (10) beat UTEP (7) by three. Prior to joining CUSA, UTEP and RICE competed in the WAC for nine years together. We met in one conference tournament. UTEP (2) beat RICE (3) in the 2005 semifinals. It's strange we have competed in the same conference for 21 years together and this will only the third meeting in the post season conference tournament.

I think this is because UTEP has had the winning basketball tradition Rice aspires to throughout our history together. Before Mike Rhoades, Rice had three years with Arsalan Kazemi, and not a lot of other success.

I see a rivalry ahead across Texas, and really hope to see UTEP home and home in future years. It would also make sense to me to pair UTEP-Rice to make that happen, and put UTSA-North Texas together.

Today, I think MTSU, Rice, Marshall, and Louisiana Tech advance.

Agree with the rivalry thingy and if Rice does win today I will be pulling for the Owls to take the tournament. MT gets an at-large and suddenly C-USA is a 2 bid league. Not 2 bit, 2 bid. 04-cheers
There is no rivalry between UTEP and Rice. UTEP has won 8 in a row and UTEP brings in just as many fans to a game in Houston as Rice.

In a way you're right it's not much of a rivalry at the moment. We have a nice winning streak in basketball and they a have a domination over us in football. They have beat us nine out of the last eleven years. RICE basketball is on the rise it will not be long until they start beating us. Hopefully we can win a couple of football games against them.

There is a rivalry coming. The improvement in the Rice basketball program has resulted in better attendance there and the rivalry is building. It will get more heated when both schools are in the MWC someday.
Rice had one of it's best teams in 50 years and got beat twice by a UTEP team that is the least talented Floyd coached team at UTEP.
UTEP's worst > Rice's best

CUAB hosted it. You fill it up.

Are you there to watch your team in the semis?

Nope. CUAB hosted it. CUAB should fill it up. It's foolish to think fans from 10 hrs away (I live in Dallas) should fill it up.
