RE: 2017 Hoops Coaching Carousel
Alford was forced to give back a year on his contract due to poor performance. Indiana needed to do better than Alford. I think Miller is a stretch but definitely has an upside that Alford doesn't.

I disagree and strongly suspect Alford was their #1 choice. The AD went out of his way to say he wanted someone with IU ties and Alford is the only one who really fit the bill. But Alford was pretty clear last night that he wasn't interested in leaving UCLA.

Word was Mack and A. Miller were the next choices but they weren't sure if Mack would leave XU and Miller was ideally waiting for Ohio St. With Matta showing no definitive signs of leaving, it looks like Miller decided to take a 7 year deal with IU.

So IU doesn't get their first choice. OSU has their "successor in waiting" snatched away. And a regional competitor loses their coach. Not seeing a lot of downside in all this.

I dunno. I could see Miller now fighting UC for area players, but then again we really haven't had all that many lately anyway. I'm not really sure what's happening with Matta and OSU but I think they'll still have some very attractive candidates if Matta moves on. UD might be eyeing Kelsey now although I'm not sure how well the fanbase would take to hiring an XU guy. Maybe they consider bringing Anthony Grant back?

Miller announced as new IU coach. My IU sources still insist Alford was #1 choice but family balked at Bloomington vs LA Baby.

Mack was NEVER in the running at IU. I trust my sources. They told me that they will NEVER allow another "Sampson type" to coach there again.

Mack was never a candidate. It was Alford #1. Notice the timing. It was announced after UCLA lost and Alford said NO. His family was not interested in going back to cornfields. Had Miller been #1 he could have been announced after UD lost.

It was Alfords to reject.

Maybe. IMO it has a better chance of hurting Xavier. Mack has recruiter Indiana hard and stolen some serious gems like his best ever recruit Bluiett and now Paul Scruggs right from under Crean and IU.

If Miller can keep the top few Indiana kids that come out every year he could field a power team barely leaving the state.

I never said anything about Alford. Mack's name was brought up and IU and it was immediately rejected.

Seems like a sound choice. I doubt he'll get them to the same level Miller seemed to be getting them, but I could see him having a long successful run back at UD.

In other news,

Miami hires Purdue Assistant HC Jack Owens

I'm kinda surprised he hasn't been mentioned for more jobs prior to this.
