Why this article shows up today when the car was found in 2000, I'm not quite sure. And they don't explain what happened to the other one.

But one of the greatest chase scenes of all time and the genesis of many later ones.

Yes.

Within the film industry, I've read that film set a clear, bright "before/after" division in terms of stunt-work and choreography.

Audiences today are so conditioned to think that car chases are all CGI. They may not appreciate how radical and dangerous this work really was. Same with the ski-chase scenes in the early James Bond movies, that could've easily resulted in death to the stunt-performers if anything had gone wrong.
