San Diego State football at risk of ending
At least according to this article.

If the Aztecs have to drop football, where do they go? Big West? And what happens to the MWC?

Not how I read the article. I don't think SDSU football is in danger of ending (it has done well for itself, it had a Big East/AAC invite, etc.). But they need a place to play.

Don't know much about Kevin Acee, but this statement:

"Well, if there is no new stadium in Mission Valley by 2020 or at least one under construction by that time, this year’s incoming freshman football class at SDSU might never become a graduating class at SDSU."

seems a bit ridiculous to me. Is there a need to figure out a solution? Yes. But SDSU will certainly be playing football one way or the other in 2020, it just might not be where they want to be playing in terms of football stadiums themselves, and it might cost them much more than they want to spend.

I just would be willing to bet that they get a stadium deal done before they drop football.

San Diego State should be perfectly fine home wise according to the article betweeen the MLB park and MLS park options.

As a last resort SDSU could play football in another city. Look at what UMass is doing playing in an NFL stadium 93 miles away.

The Holiday Bowl from the sounds of it is moving to the MLB stadium. That's a downgrade. Will the P5 continue their steadfast insterest in the Holiday Bowl or does it become a G5 bowl?

End? Can't see that.
Stuck in an unacceptable or messy stadium situation? Well within the realm of possibility given what I've seen of California stadium politics.

This sounds seriously over blown. Might this situation end up having a serious adverse affect on SDSU football---sure. But its not going to end the program. Its obviously being used as a lever to get their desired outcome in the current Soccer stadium negotiations.

Let's say it's 2020 and Petco is off the table, with no deal in sight for developing the Qualcomm area, and the stadium itself being shut down in 2018 and being unfeasible for SDSU to run the stadium as-is.

What are the possible options for SDSU?? Would they have to go to LA for "home" games?

Yup. But other programs have done things like that over a short period while arranging a long term fix. They would have to build their own long term home in that situation--but it wouldn't end the program. Building a home is something that most every program has to do at some point. SDSU has just been lucky in that regard and hasn't really needed to face that expense until now.

Why would Petco be off the table? Worst case scenario would probably be only 3 or 4 games at Petco and 2 or 3 "home" games elsewhere. SDSU could probably attract some solid "home" matchups in LA, or even Vegas or Phoenix, that would outperform a lot of smaller FBS school's attendance and revenues.

SDSU football is in trouble, but less of dropping than becoming minimal FBS. But who knows CSU and California Municipalities are known to blow things. The Raiders are about to go to Las Vegas, and SDSU is finding out the perils of living in somebody else's house.

There are a few good sites within 7 miles of campus they could build a low budget stadium. Or they can do what they did 50 years ago, partner with a HS or a JuCo and set up larger seating for 15,000, although none really looks suitable.

My own preference looking at the maps is the Oak Park (Chollas Park & Reservoir) area for an earthen stadium. It's about 2 miles south of campus. It's city land, and I think would work for a 30K stadium. Nobody has looked into it AFAIK

Put the Holiday Bowl in G5 hands and all will be forgiven for cancelling the Poinsettia.

Think this is a little too hyped up article.

If SDSU did drop football, they go to the Big West as they had arranged before.

Unless UCSD gets there first.

Alternately, they could stay in the MWC, which then adds UTEP or Rice to get back to 12 football teams.

That's what the article says. The owners are good for 2019, but prefer not to extend to 2020 and beyond.

This.

SDSU hopes to extend their luck and find another situation in which they can play in a stadium that someone else built, with SDSU paying very little to play there. It looks like they don't like the MLS stadium proposal because it would require SDSU to contribute $100 million to the stadium cost, and SDSU can't (or doesn't want to attempt to) raise that money from donors so they'd have to issue bonds.

The report that the Padres will only permit SDSU to use Petco Park for one or two years max is probably correct. It's a significant inconvenience in September and would be very dicey in October if the Padres make the playoffs. Cal played its home football games at the SF Giants' AT&T Park in 2011 while Memorial Stadium was being renovated. The Bears had one home game at AT&T in September, plus one "neutral site" game at Candlestick Park (RIP) and four home games at AT&T from October 13 onward. The two Cal home games in October didn't conflict with MLB playoff games only because the Giants missed the playoffs that year (fortunately it was an odd-numbered year - ha).

But I doubt SDSU will pull the plug on football. Either they'll grudgingly accept the MLS deal or some other deal in which they split the cost of a new stadium, or they'll stall until their backs are against the wall in 2018 or 2019 and whip up a huge bond deal at the last minute that will cost them two or three times as much as a shared-cost deal that they could make in 2017.

RE: San Diego State football at risk of ending
Of course it will be the latter. That's how these things usually work out: take the risk that by refusing to pay some money now, you might get to pay much less now, but more than likely will have to pay a lot more later.
