"Johnson picked up 23 votes from the select media pool with Central Michigan's Marcus Keene getting seven, Kent State's Jimmy Hall three, Ohio University's Jaaron Simmons two, and Western Michigan's Thomas Wilder two."

Several of you adamantly opposed me when I said Big Dog would run away with the award. It appears I was correct.

Jimmy Hall getting 3 votes is somewhat of a joke. Deserved better than a distant 3rd place finish.

Congrats to Big Dog and KD!

I think Keene was hurt by his lack of stats other than points. Yes, he scored a whole lot, but it didn't help his team win any games.

Glad to see Saul Phillips up there with the second amount of COTY votes. I think he deserved more for keeping Ohio's season alive after losing Campbell for the season.

Quote:Dambrot got 21 votes, ahead of OU's Saul Phillips with nine, Western Michigan's Steve Hawkins with four, Ball State's James Whitford with two and Kent State's Rob Senderoff with one.

Hard to argue with either of these choices.. They were the best team all season.

Congrats. I still think if the vote was held when that discussion started it would have been closer (prior to CMU's complete collapse to the finish)

I'm not a CMU fan, so I only saw him play a few times, but to say Keene had no stats beyond scoring is a bit misleading. He also finished 3rd in the league in assists. Granted their pace gave more opportunities as well.

I said it at the start if their late skid... not after thy lost 6 in a row.

When they were tied for first in the MACWest one month ago, Keene was the runaway. Player of the year won't come from a team who plays a first round road game. Boothe could have won it last season.

Akron has a knack for getting guys named POY whom I think aren't the best players on their own team.

Glad the coach who was actually most successful got some recognition this time, though.

Johnson leads Akron in points, rebounds, and is tied for the lead in assists. Who do you have ahead of him on Akron's roster?

RE: POTY, COTY
Uggg...I guess it's been a down year for the MAC.

So the POY usually goes to one of the top scorers, top rebounds, or top point guards. I watched the Akron game at Kent State last week, and I was sure Johnson wouldn't get voted POY. I know the media wouldn't vote for Jimmy Hall either, but I figured there would be someone else.

So Jimmy Hall had 18.7 ppg to Johnson's 16.2 - he had 10.6 rebounds per game vs Johnson's 7.4; most of their other numbers are about the same. So Johnson won it because of his defense? Or his speed? At least he played more than 25 minutes per game this year. Watching the second Akron/Kent State game, Johnson just looked slow. Hall defended Johnson, and he was able to keep the ball away from him. Johnson just took 6 shots. Hall and was able to hold him to 10 points and 10 rebounds. Johnson turned it over 6 times.

But, like I said, it was a down year for the MAC with no standouts

Cheatham.

As Cheatham goes, so go the Zips. Johnson is fairly steady a contributor.
