College students are declining in tolerance of differing opinions and have been for 40 years.

Quote:...not try to conceal the thinking of our own people. They are part of America. And even if they think ideas that are contrary to ours, their right to say them, their right to record them, and their right to have them at places where they are accessible to others is unquestioned, or it isn't America.

Who said that at a Dartmouth commencement?

The real world will knock them on their a$$ eventually. Of course, they'll just complain about that as well.

RE: College students tolerance on long term decline
I was in college from '97-'01 and it was very intolerant then. Can't imagine how bad it is now. I do have to disclose that for undergrad I got a useless degree from a liberal arts school. It was too late to graduate in 4 years when I realized I was going nowhere so I loaded up on business courses my last 2 years to get the credits needed to go to B-school, but couldn't rack up enough to change my major.

IMO, there's always been tension when folks with opposite viewpoints debate, etc. That was the case when I was in school but NEVER did anyone once mention actually not allowing someone to speak. That was considered insane.

When I was in school in the 90's an editorialist from the student paper said that if you saw a pro life person with a cross, that you should kick them in the head. The paper said it was "within the confines of free speech".

I suspect a view of kicking a protected class in the head would not have gotten published.

I can imagine, like many, that it's worse in the "I'd rather punch 300 innocent people and one nazi than to punch no nazi's at all" would make things worse.
