NCAA Violation Involving PJ Fleck
I don't know if this has been mentioned in another thread or not, but I have not seen anything.

http://www.startribune.com/u-to-self-rep...415636404/

- The University of Minnesota is planning to self-report a minor NCAA violation related to P.J. Fleck’s contact with one of his former players, athletics department spokesman Jake Ricker confirmed Tuesday.

Athletic director Mark Coyle has spoken with Western Michigan AD Kathy Beauregard to reassure her that Fleck isn’t recruiting his former players, Ricker confirmed.

“From my understanding, even if a coach sends a former student-athlete a text that even says ‘happy birthday,’ that’s a violation,” Coyle told the St. Paul Pioneer Press, which first reported news of the minor violation.

Ricker said Coyle would have no further comment.

Last week, Western Michigan granted standout linebacker Robert Spillane his release to transfer another school. Reports surfaced that Fleck had been in contact with Spillane and other former players.

Spillane tweeted “contrary to media reports” his decision to get his release from the school “has nothing to do with P.J. Fleck or the University of Minnesota.”

Well if all he said is "Happy Birthday"... 07-coffee3

In all seriousness the part about this that really bothers me is that he allegedly talked with "several players" according to Andy Pepper.

What is upsetting is they use the "happy birthday" example in their statement, as a way to make the reader thing it was just a friendly "hey". When we all know it was not that at all.

Classless (and arrogant) statement from their AD. Goes to show the root of their problems at Minnesota.

I mean did any of us really think Minny's AD was going to acknowledge everything in full?

Not surprised that Fleck did it or that Coyle is covering his azz.

In all seriousness the part about this that really bothers me is that he allegedly talked with "several players" according to Andy Pepper.

Even though it's a "minor" violation, Fleck had to know that he was going against the rules to make contact with Spillane. Of course, Minnesota wasn't going to make a big deal out of it that would bring the NCAA into it.

This. Exactly. However, it's kind of a slap that it was just a "Happy Birthday". How many places self-report themselves for something like that if that was The Only thing? Nobody. So it was kind of arrogant. I understand the concept, but, just don't give an example if you're Minn. Just say exchanging some texts wishing the former player well.

And ya know, it's the year 2000 now, so pictures can also be sent for a happy birthday, as noted above, but with a little gopher twist (wink wink, nudge nudge):
