Interesting article but I question their classification criteria. Why is Cincinnati a "mid-sized" city ranked fourth in comparison with places like Ann Arbor, Norman, OK and Durham, NC? Without digging deeper in their analysis it seems that metro areas (of which Cincinnati is either 27th or 28th in population) would be a better metric for sorting.

No question though this is truly a hotbed of college basketball. Three teams within six miles of Fountain Square dancing; strong regional interests in other big tradition programs in the tri-state area, all with dedicated fans and alumni residing here too.

I'm with you on that. It's been refreshing the past month not having to hear from X loyalists about their fan-anointed "elite" program and how they'll be Final Four bound once again (Just like last year, I suppose).

If NC Central beats Bethune-Cookman tonight there will be three in the Durham-Chapel Hill area (less than 15 miles from Durham to Chapel Hill).

As of right now, UC-Irvine, UCLA, and USC are all projected to be in the tourney. Irvine is about 50 miles away though, so if you're comparing that to Cincinnati then we'd have 4 (Dayton is a lock).

In some years the DC area has 3 tourney teams. Georgetown, Maryland, George Mason, George Washington, American, and Howard are only about 12 miles apart as the crow flies.

But overall you're right - we're dead center in the middle of the best college basketball in the country. 4 of the 15 schools that have won multiple national titles are within a 2 hour drive of Cincinnati (Kentucky, Louisville, Indiana, and Cincinnati). Ohio State, Dayton, Butler, and Xavier aren't bad programs either.
