Thoughts on Charleston and the N Charleston Collisium
Would love to hear people's thoughts on how the non basketball portion of the tournament went. I was only there on Monday but from what I can tell it was a big success from the Seahawk point of view. The people I talked to seem to really enjoy the free time due to the quality amenities and restaurant Charleston has to offer and also how the coliseum was in walking distance from the Seahawk hotel.

One BIG BIG thing I would encourage the power at be to address would be the N Charleston event staff. Refusing to let people move down to a lower bowl when the CAA needs to look good on TV is just dumb. Not allowing long time supporters to celebrate with the team last night was also them being unnecessarily difficult.

These issues are addressable though and I am excited about the the tournament being in a great location for the next 2 years.

Couldn't be happier. We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn and simply walked across a small bridge to the game. Good food and great places for sight seeing while not at games. The coliseum was nice with a good atmosphere. Only 3-3.5 hours from Wilmington is hard to beat.

For the purposes of UNCW fans, the best location in the history of the CAA.

Agreed. Ample places to stay within walking distance of the arena. Plenty of attractions & good dining options throughout the area. Generally warmer external temperatures than VA/MD. Was a bit concerned that the location might afford CofC with a bit of a "home" advantage, but the UNCW faithful came out in larger numbers than the fans for the team in town ensuring that I was wrong. There is room to improve the ticket situation, but that might be more of a CAA thing not a Charleston thing.

I think the CoC fans in the final were really taken aback by how many Seahawk faithful showed up. For the first several minutes it they entered it was all they talked about around us. I'd venture to say the CoC program will try to stifle that next year by getting the word out better to their folks to show up or it will be another UNCW home game. It really seemed like they didn't see that coming.

That's on them. I mean what did they think if that's the case.

You're the defending champs who are less than 4 hours away.

No surprise that you guys drew well. Especially after CofC fans showed up at the Trask and whooped it up with your fans after the loss.

UNCW fans have always traveled well and shown up at CAA championships. The loss to CofC and their fans had no impact.

Now, I DO think it drove our team to want to demolish them...and they did....04-chairshot

RE: Thoughts on Charleston and the N Charleston Collisium
I certainly wasn't surprised by your turnout, but most of our fans probably were. A lot of them got there late because of the traffic. Many were coming from work.

Next year the tourney is 3/2-3/5, and UNCW has spring break starting that weekend, but CofC does not. They don't have it until two weeks later. If CofC does well next year, expect a much bigger student presence.

The tourney was also overshadowed a bit here locally because South Carolina and Clemson were playing in baseball this weekend, along with CofC and the Citadel. College baseball is huge here, just like in ILM, but there are a lot of casual fans who turn the page from college basketball as soon as college baseball starts here.

The tourney was also much more well covered locally compared to Baltimore. All 6 of our local sportscasters (3 stations) were covering the game last night, doing live shots for all their shows, plus 2 stations sent reporters to do reports on the economic impact. In Baltimore last year, I remember they did a :30 highlight package for Towson's game, but not much more.

Fine with us. Charleston is more than welcome to host "home games" for UNCW the next two years. Your hospitality in doing so is certainly appreciated...04-cheers

Some of us thought there would be more UNCW fans than there were. Some of us hope Keatts stays at UNCW. The more good coaches that decide to stay with their team in the CAA the higher the other teams have to raise the bar ultimately making the whole conference better.

If we had around 2.5k at the finals, that's pretty good. We hope Keatts stays as well....:-)

It was pretty good except for these two A-holes that sat near us in the second half 04-rock

Ha! It was a sweet location and i agree with your comments about the event staff. Being a Vet of the set up we had in Richmond, i liked the hotel set up there. The Embassy suites set up we had there is tough to beat. (which is interesting because there is one right near the arena too). If we stay at the Doubletree next year i'd like to see the Seahawkclub have a tent like they did in Richmond.

Really tough to beat walking across the street, especially nice so that you can enjoy a few cocktails and not worry about driving.

The Charleston fans in my section were nice (we were surrounded by them, though the next section over was full of Seahawk fans), at least at first, but then I watched as they went through the 5 stages of grief over the course of the game. It was fairly entertaining.

One guy decided to make fun of Cacok's hair midway through the 2nd half. Moments later, Cacok got an "and-1", and the Seahawk fans around him went nuts and asked him to keep insulting him. lol.

Definitely loved the venue and location. 12,400 seat arena is pretty perfect, though I'll echo the point that the staff needs to let people downstairs. Lots of empty seats that made the place look a lot emptier than it was all tournament long.

Plenty of hotels, restaurants, bars, and stores in walking distance around the arena, and it feels very safe. Absolutely perfect spot for a tournament of our size.

We were surrounded in 106 where we started. They were talking alot, my main response was " Scoreboard(we were up 10 at the time), and #2 only means one thing!! haha I heard it got testy down there in 109, but i can't confirm nor deny

I just let any negative comments go by. The same fan who was arguing that Keatts is a cheater on the recruiting trail later shook my hand to congratulate us on a great victory. Sometimes when a guy is drunk and sad, you just let what he says be "words for the wind"....they don't matter, and I don't think he really means them.

This season helped cement these 2 teams as really good rivals (we already were, but now even casual fans are aware). Each team won in the other's house in the regular season, finished 1-2 in the standings, and then we beat them in the title game in their own city. Does it get more intense than that?

I almost forgot how animated and vocal their players were following their victory in trask, with Chuck and Brantley (I think) exchanging words in the handshake line.

Yep, I was right there at the press table in the middle of that. Heated exchange indeed. I think Charleston treated that game a bit like their "Super Bowl" since that was the first and only time they've beaten us in the Keatts era.

I believe we are now 8-1 against the Cougars under Keatts when you include CAA Tournament games. I imagine that's frustrating for the Charleston players, given that they're a top team.

We were asleep at the wheel last night. A record like that is surely worth of a "who's your daddy chant" COGS

Ha! I think the students started that chant, actually. It was after Ingram hit a 3 in somebody's eye.
