Is this a bad sign for ESPN or just over exaggerated?

It's not a bad sign for ESPN. Not getting out in front would be a huge issue. Television is changing rapidly. Outside of the sporting event. No one is really watching.

Ya, there sport center shows are a beating...they are becoming MTV if the early 2000s.

I rarely watch ESPN studio shows either-more interested in local teams. I'll watch pre-game and halftime but not the non-event related shows

You mean the political sports shows. Shocking nobody is watching.

these articles are click bait..they exaggerate like they always do...last year a story like everyone in espn was getting fired, that they were letting go of hundreds of employees...few added perspective that it was only about 3% profits employees

.....it will be less than a handful of guys with huge contracts..they believe they can make anyone a star, so they dont feel the need to overpay anyone ..and only tv talent

its exaggerated on how bad but its still not a good sign when youu are looking for 3x raise from someone looking making any kind of cuts

I actually enjoy PTI.

ESPN overpaid for rights to live content like the NFL, NBA, College football ect.... Then instead of actual sports on tv they went into shows about sports too heavily ... basically diluted what the set out to do. Also, a vast majority of customers are on to their game plan with how the force feed certain conferences, teams, and agendas to where folks are tuning them out. The catch is this really hasn't translated to viewers or money for their competitors like FSN, CBS/SN, and NBC/SN.

So all the cuts are around $100 million. This could be why the rumors of adding non-football schools to your conference may have some legitimacy. ESPN isn't going to offer an increase, so the next thing is to increase the tourney credits.

I haven't watched ESPN in yeeeears but when I did I was always a huge fan of Tony Reali (and Around the Horn) and PTI. Otherwise, only the 30 for 30's had any kind of cultural value.

Yes ESPN is contracting from the giant they were. They're still huge and the sports entity that looms over everything but they are getting smaller and online streaming is going to change the name of the game in the next 5 years. Either they adjust or someone else will be taking the crown in the coming decade.

Favorite Show for years was the Original Sports Reporters where real newspaper reporters/columnists (not ESPN only mouth pieces like today) would give their views on the week in sports.

I enjoyed Sports Nation when it was Beadle and Cowherd.

I may be in the minority -- having been a lifetime metro NY resident, but I have no need to tune into Sports Center when my local media, if I turn it on, will cover the teams I follow. I'm also not following European sports. Anything outside of MLB, the NFL, NCAA FB and BB -- I can look up on line and follow/read/watch that way.

Having been a fan of the Big East for the last 20+ years, I don't need to watch the hatchet job that ESPN performed for my college teams. The local media would do that nicely enough.

ESPN is taking a hit but FS1 lost more housholds in February than ESPN did, first time in many months this is true. I don't think ESPN is in near as much trouble as some of the other tv brands sports or otherwise.

Agree they should get back to showing more live sports and less faux drama filled sports opinion shows.

I am sort of right were you are. I don't watch ESPN (the mothership) unless UC is playing (which is not very often anymore-- CBS Sports broadcasted 1/3 of our football and 1/3 of our basketball games and if we get in the ESPN universe it is for ESPN News or ESPN U). Haven't watched Sports Center in a few years (after the blow up of the Old Big East-- got tired of the ratched propaganda).

I watched it a lot from the 80s-2012/2013.

Agreed. Disney can bundle like crazy with abc, Disney channels, and espn. Good luck getting streaming subs if you're missing those. Disney can negotiate all or none. Fox doesn't have the same power.

It is all bad if we don't have multiple bidders. That is the way for us to get more $$$.

We have a winner^^^^^^^ It's hilarious that most on here don't understand simple economics. They're losing millions of subscribers, revenues are down over a billion dollars and laying off employees but yet a G5 conference is going to get a raise

So far everyone has received a raise. Only the old existing members of the c-usa went backwards. You can't compare the AAC with the c-usa on any level. We have inventory that can be shown on cbs and abc. The c-usa doesn't. Nothing wrong with it but it is what it is.

We are going up from $2 million. Just a matter of how much.
