This is a great interview.

I liked the line early on: "I don't know what it's been like in the past, but it doesn't really matter."

RE: Spring football practice started today
He uses some "coach speak" but there is a real genuineness about this guy. I've heard from a former player that the energy level and intensity around the program is at an all time high. He hastened to say, even more than what we saw under Brian Kelly.

How will that translate into wins and losses? We'll have to wait and see. But there is every reason to be optimistic. With that energy, turn a couple of disheartening, close losses each of the past four years into wins and the program can be right back on track: ranked, competing for conference championships and playing with passion in bowl games.

RE: Spring football practice started today
I figured I'd put this here since most of us probably didn't know that Kyle Trout is still practicing with OSU this spring (no worries, he's still planning to transfer after he gets his degree). Looks like 3 more have recently announced they are transferring from OSU and if I'm not mistaken they may still need to "lose" a player or two to get their scholarship total down to 85. Of the 3, Stump may be headed to Vanderbilt, but I wonder if UC is a possibility for WR James Clark (likely to be a grad transfer) or OL Tyler Gerard (from Portsmouth, OH) if he's looking to play elsewhere.

Ohio State’s roster has had some attrition in the last few days, and Urban Meyer confirmed it at a press conference following the first day of spring practice on Tuesday.

Buckeyes WR James Clark, OL Tyler Gerald and WR Alex Stump are no longer with the program. The most bizarre departure? Gerald, a rising redshirt sophomore, who just quit the team.

OL Kyle Trout is still practicing with the team this spring, then will get his degree and head to Cincinnati as a graduate transfer.

Quote: Jeremy Birmingham @Birm
Meyer talking about the surprising departure of Tyler Gerald “He just quit. I had nothing to do with that."
11:26 AM - 7 Mar 2017

Gerald was a 4-star recruit in the Class of 2015 and Meyer said he had nothing to do with him leaving the team.

Meyer also said Clark will run track at Ohio State this spring, then transfer. Stump also will transfer, but didn’t specify where.

It’s unlikely that Clark or Stump were in Ohio State’s plans at wide receiver.

Clark caught six passes for 47 yards in 2016, appearing in all 13 games. He played in 12 of 13 games in 2015. Stump redshirted as a freshman in 2015 and caught one pass for 8 yards in 2016.

Land of 10’s Jeremy Birmingham says that Vanderbilt is the most likely landing spot for Stump, a Avon, Ohio, native.

Is there any way we can be good this year? 8-10 wins?

Anybody want to weigh in?

Yes. The talent level isn't where Fickell will get it to but there's more than enough talent to compete with most of the teams in our league and on our schedule. I watch those practice videos and I see a team that's highly motivated and has completely bought in. I'm expecting at least 8 wins.

I fully expect this coaching staff to surprise a lot of people. The talentis there... The adjustment may pose a bit of a struggle but I fully expect at least 9 wins.

This may sound bad, but honestly I will be happy if we just compete and give a ****. Watching Bearcat football this last year was no fun at all. Got to get the fire back in here before and show a damned pulse. I will be happy with 7-8 wins, and a bowl game thats not a vacation. Anything else after that is gravy IMHO.

I'm with you. The downward spiral of the last few years took a lot of the fun out of UC football.

TBH, all I can see is a winning record. That, however, gives us a chance at some bowl where we will at least try to win. That in itself is all the improvement I am looking forward to.

We had enough talent to compete nearly to the end with Houston. Fickell has enough to make waves his first year with a strong likelihood that we'll be leading the recruiting rankings in our conference. When has UC ever done that?

Nobody seemed too interested in this earlier, but just in case here's more on the Trout situation from cleveland:

Kyle Trout transferring to Cincinnati, so why is he still practicing with the Buckeyes this spring?

That article says he only has one year left of eligibility, but I thought previous reports indicated he'd have two so we'll have to see.

RE: Spring football practice started today
I think its great Urban is letting Trout practice with the team this spring. At least he will be in shape coming to UC. I don't think he had to do that.

I think he has been more than fair to UC (publically came out and said UC should be in B12, etc.). I also recall he came to UC when he was Florida's coach and hung out at practice with BK. He had very positive things to say about UC then as well.

I think it shows a couple things:

a: there is no conspiracy that some claim regarding o$U vs UC
b: UC is so insignificant to O$U, they would rather players transfer here than to a school that could hurt them, like another B1G team etc.

I have never bought into o$U conspiracy theories. My take has always been, they see UC as just like every other school in Ohio (Toledo, Akron, BGSU, OU, etc) and we are just a small blip on their radar. In fact, I know many o$U fans that root for UC as in, "it's cute when little UC is good". Granted, those same people didn't think it was so fun when we were ranked in front of them in the polls in 2009. It wasn't as 'fun' then. That is another discussion.

Point is if anything, they don't care about us because we are a small blip on their radar and no threat.

Even if we got into the B12 I doubt most of them would care.
