Damn right. All these SEC fan trolls on here saying sure play them in Bb even if no FB-no way. They just WANT TO PLAY IN MEMPHIS.

We used to be good at basketball and lousy at football. At least if they lost to us now in FB, it wouldn't make them look so bad. Might still make them feel bad.

Basketball, OTOH -- if they had played us and lost this year in basketball? The honeymoon for Barnes might have been over. We are only nationally relevant in basketball as somebody's worst loss.

Nah, it just seems when we have these lulls, we either catch team on their way up or when we are down.

We had been 17-1 vs. OM then renewed it after 15 years and have gone 5-7 since 98, including two 3-game losing streaks.

We picked up UTK in time for Tony Harris to go 4-0 vs. Memphis, then get the Pearl years.

In football, our series with UTk ends right before they reel off three 5-7 seasons in a row.

Vs. Mississippi State, we have no games from 04-09 and State goes 13-38 in that time. The year they come back on the schedule is Mullen's 2nd season and they go 9-4 and skull drag Memphis 49-7.

quit whining and make more birdies

I wonder if OM will let us back on their FB schedule maybe in three years?

Edit: I see they are scheduled to play @Memphis in 2019.

Could be interesting.

The 2019 return game only has a 0.00% chance of happening because negative probabilities do not exist in the wild.

I think it helps UT recruiting, sets us up to lose a top recruit to UT, but yes some people don't get laid enough.

It's not like we are recruiting everyone in town anyway. Can't hurt us anymore, butts in seats will help.

If orange butts in the seats outnumber blue butts in the seats, what does that say about the Memphis fan base?

Exactly right. A lot of people aren't old enough to even know about it.

Memphis has never been outdrawn in a game featuring the University of Memphis at the Liberty Bowl by another fanbase.

Never.

Volunteers always come calling when we're down in football or basketball. Pearl was the only vol ever brave enough to play us when we were up. I say hell no. Not until we are back on the up swing. Right now who knows when that is. I've lost hope. Feel the way I did back when Tic was here.

I don't think the situation right now is as bad as the Tic Price era. I think you're over exaggerating and overreacting a bit. Tubby Smith is hell of a better coach than Tic Price will ever be. Tic Price should never have gotten the coaching job in Memphis. Talk about a panicky hire at the time. Geesh!

Of course THEY want it. Allows them access to the Memphis market without using their recruiting funds and allows them to have players see them without using up a official visit.

Last time i checked Coca Cola does not go out of their way to help Pepsi advertise in Atlanta.

Great, we don't catch them wen they are down, instead, they just had a positive year in which seven of their nine rotation players are freshman and sophomores.

just be glad they'll play us. they hold all the cards. we need to get Arkansas back on the schedule too

Yes Arkansas needs help recruiting Memphis just as we have a couple of top classes coming through the Memphis school system. I hope Memphis AD is on Arkansas and IT's Christmas card list.

you do know that all these recruits can see Arkansas and TN play on the TV thing, right?

Lots of things you can see on TV which do not have the same effect as seeing them live. We need to work more on keeping these schools OUT OF MEMPHIS instead of giving them an engraved invitation

I'm just curious, how does this "hurt" recruiting? I never bought into Cal saying that when he wouldn't play UT, Ole Miss, etc. It doesn't logically make sense with basketball recruiting to say if UT, Ole Miss, Arkansas, or whomever came to play here that we'd lose our recruits to those schools. We need to play the best competition we can out of conference along with buy games, as needed, in order to get the fan base excited again (along with winning).

It says, we have city kids playing for UT and friends and family supporting them. It engages the UT alums even more to support their team.

It's not about getting all of the kids out of Memphis, it's about losing the next Penny.

Not crazy about renewing the UT series. But with our attendance problems, I guess it's for the best.

It's so amazing hearing people say they don't think will help UT with recruiting. Why do you think UT and Ole Miss and Arkansas wants to come here, for the barbecue? Of course it helps them. Just like it helps our football program more than theirs when we schedule a football series. Some things are as they appear.

What facts back up that claim? How, over the past 30 years, has that truly affected "our" recruiting efforts?

Not our recruiting efforts, our opponents ability to recruit here. Cal knew this, Josh knew this.

Why do you think they want the hoops series with us, but not a football series?

We beat Arkansas 3 of 4 in football in the 90s, they cancel the football series, we say take a hike on the hoops series. Haven't seen them recruiting a lot of Corey Becks and Dwight Stewarts out of Memphis since then.

This is how it works.

A local dad decides to take his kid to his first college game. Normally that's a Memphis game and you end up with a little Tiger fan for life.

Bring UT, Ole Miss, or Arkansas to town, and SEC dad's pick those games. We lose a good number of those kids forever at their first game.

That is why you don't bring them here.
