All-MAC, All-Defense, All-Freshmen teams
2017 Men's Basketball Awards

Quote:Cleveland, Ohio - Today the Mid-American Conference announced the All-MAC First Team, Second Team, Third Team and Honorable Mention selections for the 2016-17 season. The teams were voted on by the league's 12 head coaches. The league's All-Freshman Team and All-Defensive team were also announced today.

Kent State’s Jimmy Hall was named to this year’s All-MAC first team, marking the third consecutive season that the senior has been selected for the honor. The last student-athlete to garner three straight first team selections was Buffalo’s Javon McCrea (2012-14). Joining Hall on the 2016-17 First Team is Akron’s Isaiah Johnson, Central Michigan’s Marcus Keene, Ohio’s Jaaron Simmons & Western Michigan’s Thomas Wilder. This marks the second straight season that Johnson has been named to the First Team, while Simmons & Wilder were second team selections last season.

The All-MAC Second Team featured Akron’s Kwan Cheatham Jr., Ball State’s Tayler Persons, Buffalo’s Blake Hamilton, Eastern Michigan’s James Thompson IV & Toledo’s Steve Taylor Jr.. Wilder was named to the All-Freshman Team last season. This marks back-to-back years that Thompson has been named to the second-team, while UB’s Hamilton received third team honors last season.

All-MAC Third Team honors went to Ball State’s Franko House, Central Michigan’s Braylon Rayson, Northern Illinois’ Marin Maric, Toledo’s Jonathan Williams & Western Michigan’s Tucker Haymond. Rayson, Maric & Williams were each named to the third team a season ago.

Rounding out this year's team as Honorable Mentions were Akron’s Antino Jackson, Bowling Green’s Zack Denny, Buffalo’s C.J. Massinburg, Miami’s Michael Weathers & Ohio’s Jordan Dartis. Massinburg and Darits were both named to the All-Freshman Team last season.

The MAC All-Freshman Team was made up of Bowling Green’s Dylan Frye, Miami’s Michael Weathers, Northern Illinois’ Eugene German, Ohio’s Jason Carter and Western Michigan’s Reggie Jones.

The second annual All-Defensive Team was made up of Ball State’s Trey Moses, BGSU’s Denny, Buffalo’s Dontay Caruthers, Eastern Michigan’s Tim Bond & Kent State’s Deon Edwin.

RE: All-MAC, All-Defense, All-Freshmen teams
I'd be interested to see the vote totals. I'd imagine it was very close for the last spot or two on first team and the second team. I thought Williams would be second team over Persons, but overall I think they are good selections.

Really surprised Toledo's Jordan Lauf didn't make the "Defensive" team, especially given his body of work over 4 seasons. But Zack Denny from BG did make it...ridiculous. Lauf owned Denny tonight, so I guess that was the revenge for him.

The only one I disagree with is Blake Hamilton not making first team. He should be in the running the POTY IMO.

My guess is the voting was very tight, so theoretically when you add in the media votes, Blake could still be player of the year without even being on the first team.

Two MAC media members (GT of ABJ and Jason Arkley of Athens Messenger) that I'm aware of have published their ballot and both had Big Dog as their #1 choice for POY. They both also had Phillips as COY. Dambrot might end up as a victim of his own success once again. Not to take anything away from Phillips as what he has done to rebound Ohio from the loss of Campbell was terrific.

i agree with this with Dambrot...He is just expected to win every year so it is hard for him to do something outstanding to win Coach of the Year.. He shouldn't be punished for his own success.

Miami wins both freshman of the year awards, when's the last time one school swept those?

I would also go with Phillips as COY.

FWIW, the last time an Ohio State football coach won Big Ten COY was Earle Bruce ... in 1979. In fact, OSU coaches have only won the award 3 times since the league awarded it.

(Kirk Ferentz at Iowa has won 4 since 2002).

Phillips isn't a terrible choice and I'm not going to be bent out of shape if he does win.

I think a big difference in your example is that Dambrot is the one would made Akron what it is today. They were a nobody before. OSU was an established program that recruited for itself long before 1979.

RE: All-MAC, All-Defense, All-Freshmen teams
not that I care all that much about these individual awards given that basketball is supposed to be a team sport, so if Saul doesn't win it's no big deal to me, although I would love to see him rewarded for his hard work this year. but, my thought about Akron's coach is this...he is a very good, even great, coach, there is no doubt about that. but, in a year where his team was picked to win the MAC and his team won the MAC (regular season), is that a noteworthy accomplishment for him or is it just more of him doing his job? Saul took a team that was picked to do well, had a catastrophic injury occur in the middle of the season and still got his team to the #2 spot. which is more of an accomplishment? just a thought.

Like you I'm not going to fret over who wins or loses. What Saul has done is terrific. He's certainly worth the consideration. My argument for Dambrot winning it is more to do with how Akron ran away with the conference this year and pretty much had it wrapped up by mid February.
