It's amazing that one of our worst defensive players gets defense dive POY. There is more to defense than blocks.

One of the worst defensive UAB teams ever gets DPOY. Amazing.

We had maybe our worst season ever as a program - maybe not by he sheer number of wins, but weighted for our SOS, it's close. I hope no one is happy with any awards they may get. They need to funnel all energy into trying to salvage an abysmal season this week.

If the goals were

1. Getting around 3000 to 3500 in attendance
2. Getting Lee recognized in the conference as a "defensive" player
3. Getting 7th place in one of the worst conferences in basketball

Then yes, very successful.

If you have to use the blue font to denote sarcasm, then you fail at sarcasm.

Fixed that for you...

I don't care what the box score says, I'd be very surprised if we have even hit 2k butts in seats during conference play, and for some games its been barely half that. Bartow has been a ghost town most of the year.

I would not have voted Lee DPOTY. IMHO he did not earn it. I like the guy but have seen him get beat on defense time after time and I'm not talking about doubling down to get a block. I'm talking on ball man on man. I might reluctantly agree with second team but would vote him third. Just my two cents.

He has a chance for redemption and should start Wednesday night.

Totally agree. Blocks are fun to watch and all, but Lee's defense otherwise was pretty embarrassing. Bad choice for DPOY.

Blocking shots is one of the best defensive stats. It altars game plans, it intimidates the shooters. Lee is good on ball defender, he runs the floor well. He guards 2 thru 5.
And he rebounds. If not Lee who. I'm happy for Lee. Dang it's hard being a Blazer some of you refuse to be satisfied or happy for a Blazer.

Lee's not even the best defensive player on the team, much less the conference. Who? Hakeem Baxter.

I'm happy for him and glad UAB got recognition. But I am not going to pretend that it is deserved or that Lee is a good defensive player.

He could have helped himself in a lot of ways by gaining 20 extra lbs over the past 3 years. If he and Denzell could somehow switch weight...

Agreed. no telling how many baskets and offensive rebounds we gave up going for the Block. it's really a selfish stat. Plant your feet and put your hands up. draw a charge.....

Lee could be going for a block on the perimeter, and the offensive guy shot fakes, puts the ball on the floor and drives for a lay up. Or worse resets his feet and drains a 3.

RE: William Lee All-C-USA 2nd Team
The problem is not the blocks. Its from the position it comes from. Lee plays out on the floor a lot so his (attempted) blocks down low oftentimes leaves his guy open for a shot, to get a rebound, to get a pass from the guy whose shot is attempted to be blocked, etc. He sometimes sacrifices position for the shot block attempt - which he is, of course, good at. If Lee was a center there wouldn't be nearly as much of a concern.

RE: William Lee All-C-USA 2nd Team
Again I'm not upset about going for the blocks. They have a responsibility to rotate to the open defender. Hell, they practice this. He is getting beat man on man a lot which irks me. He is being beaten off the dribble and not fighting his way through a screen or a team mate not switching. We are not playing good team defense and we have individuals that are simply not very good defenders outside of Baxter. They can improve. That's why I'm more than ever in favor of bringing in a defensive guru. I have no idea if that is his plan.

Baxter is easily the best defender on the team.
