They had the money to pay Underwood, too, and they let Illinois outbid them.

Also, Marshall is paid at Wichita by someone with a lot more money than T. Boone Pickens.

To your point, Marshall is the 9th highest paid coach already. I imagine it will take more than money to lure him away. I certainly don't think Ok State is a better situation then he has now. I would be more worried about the Indiana job if I were a Witchita State fan.

It's not all about money with Marshall. He's turned down offers that were for more than Wichita was paying at the time. Marshall will make 3.5M starting this coming season and return what could very well be a top 10 team. He's said many times before that he won't go into any kind of rebuild again. If he leaves Wichita, it will be for one of the top jobs in the country and one that he doesn't have to spend time building back up. He's also said a man can only eat so many hamburgers. Pretty sure it's going to take one of the elite jobs to come open and be offered for him to leave. I also wouldn't be surprised if he gets pushed up to 4M in the near future.

Everyone always wants to talk about Koch money and I won't deny that we've been blessed as a school and a city to have the investments made by Charles and the Koch Foundation. But most of Marshall's salary comes from other wealthy donors and not from Charles. With that said, Charles thinks very highly of Marshall and if funds need to be raised he will chip in and so will others. Marshall isn't leaving for money.

I agree with you entirely. The fact that he stayed at Winthrop as long as he did leads me to believe that he is a guy who is not interested in job hopping. If a premier job (Duke, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville) became available maybe he would be interested. Indiana certainly has tremendous history, but I don't know if it's on that level or not. If it isn't it's only a notch below. But who knows if Marshall is even interested in leaving, he certainly has a great situation now.

I was hoping UMass would have hired someone before the VCU job opened. They are going to be going after similar coaches.

Quote:University of Massachusetts will hire Winthrop’s Pat Kelsey as its next basketball head coach, according a source with direct knowledge of the hire.

Kelsey went 102–59 over five seasons at Winthrop. He reached the NCAA tournament this year and won two Big South regular season titles.

Kelsey, 41, replaces Derek Kellogg, a former Minuteman point guard who went 155–137 in nine seasons as head coach. He reached one NCAA tournament in that span and finished this season 15–18 and 4–14 in league play. UMass dismissed him immediately after the season ended.

UMass officials value the energy and passion Kelsey will bring to the program, which has a new practice facility that cost nearly $20 million to build. Before reaching the NCAA tournament this year, Kelsey may have been known best for the passionate speech he gave in the wake of the shootings in Newtown, Conn., after a game at Ohio State in December 2012.

Prior to Winthrop, Kelsey served for two seasons as the associate head coach at Xavier, which gives him significant experience in the Atlantic 10. Before his time at Xavier, he was an assistant at Wake Forest under Skip Prosser for eight seasons.

Other candidates for the UMass job included Miami associate head coach Chris Caputo, Celtics assistant Micah Shrewsberry and Vermont coach John Becker.

Alford going back to Indiana is starting to gain some steam. Rumors have Adidas paying his excite fee out of UCLA. The Bruins recently dumped Adidas for UA.

We shoulda hired Kelsey five years ago instead of the guy we just canned. Good hire by UMass.

Illinois tried to get Crean when he was still at Marquette.

There were only two jobs that Crean legitimately pursued while at Marquette. One was obviously Indiana. The other was Kansas. Other schools pursued Crean while he was at Marquette, but those two were the only ones he was intrigued by and listened to.

Not true. Crean had dinner with the Illinois AD. Illinois backed off after the meeting.

I wonder if Miami will look at John Groce. He's a Midwestern guy, had success in the MAC, and is a name.

For Crean, who's ever jumped from one Big Ten school to another. Directly?

While not a fan of the Harbaugh's, you don't want to be on their bad side. Indiana just got articulately and sharply criticized with that particular firing, and the Harbies shot straight and true about that culture.

Kind of makes that place one you want to avoid. Not "GOAT" by any means.

The fact that Crean had dinner with the Illinois AD isn't necessarily evidence that he was truly interested. It might mean nothing more than that he took the meeting as a courtesy. Illinois may have backed off because Crean told them he wasn't interested. We'll probably never know.

College basketball is a relatively community. Smart coaches aren't quick to burn bridges.

Well, have fun with your athletic donors, G-Town.

Smartest Gtown move? Shaka Smart has no real buyout. Can they top $3 mill? Also: Amaker, A.Miller, Crean. Who wants to deal with Big John?
