So in the process of picking All-MAC teams for Read Fieldhouse, I started poking around Thomas Wilder's numbers. Ken Pom's site publishes a leaderboard for a stat called offensive rating, which basically measures offensive efficiency. An explainer on his stats can be found here:
http://kenpom.com/blog/stats-explained/
The O Rtg number is broken down by usage rate, or how many possesions end in a shot (or I think assist maybe?) by that player. Ken Pom publishes one leaderboard for guys over a 28% usage, one for guys over 24%, one for guys over 20%, etc. Because it's easier to be offensively efficient when you aren't shooting at much of a volume (Kellen McCormick).
Anyway. Wilder leads the MAC during conference play by a pretty wide margin. But what surprised me is how high he rated on the national leaderboard. His usage rate is 27.5%, and his O Rtg is 13th for guys over 24% usage. But if his usage were just 0.5% higher, or if the cutoff for the top leaderboard were 27.5% instead of 28%, he would be 4th in the nation in O Rtg for players with that usage or higher.
Three other Broncos have found spots on this leaderboard. In 2004 Mike Williams finished 3rd for guys over 28% usage. In 2005 Levi Rost finished 3rd among guys with over 24% usage. And in 2010 David Kool finished 2nd for guys above 28% usage, coming one spot behind Jimmer Fredette. Time to tune into the game!
