You are absolutely correct. What dig it cost to refurbish Pray-Harold, or build the science complex? What is it going to cost for the refurbishing of Strong Hall? I think that project was in the neighborhood of 40 million. Just with what I have mentioned, the university is doing great things for the academic areas on campus. 35 million for the refurbishing of the athletic campus, with approximately 10 million coming from private donations, to me, is reasonable.
P-H cost $42 million ( http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2011/09/18/e...ay-harrold ), Strong is going to be about $40 million ( https://www.theodysseyonline.com/emu-pla...lion-funds ), and the Science Renovation was about $90 million ( http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/...29069.html ).
And how much of that 172 million came/is going to come...from private donations?
I don't want to sound snarky here, but those buildings will be filled with students every day. They will be accessible to all students. Those buildings will house faculty offices and research projects. As a result, I'm fine with minimal funding from private donors going to these projects.
Nothing snarky, that 172 million may or may not have been money well spent. One thing is sure, it was all on the taxpayer/student dime. Also, all of these buildings will be accessible to all students, and even more in the form of fans, alumni, and the greater community at large. The buildings will also house faculty offices (coaches, trainers, other staff).
The bigger point is this comparatively small project (170+ vs 35), which will probably end up being 50% paid for by private donations, which ultimately puts the student/public price tag at around 15-17 million, is a gigantic home run for the school, the students, faculty, community, etc.
In addition, as mentioned elsewhere, apparently this will free up some 100k sq.ft of existing space for repurposing and reorganization. If that space had to be built from scratch, would the cost be more than 15-17 million? Since the answer is yes, it could be argued that the overall 'cost' of this project is zero.
Yet the naysayers and EMU haters still capture the headlines. Luckily, there are still some people in positions of power at EMU that get it.
Can't wait to see it all come together.
