Got to hand it to AD Lyke: many people have talked about raising this kind of money at EMU, but she is doing it.

The momentum builds! What a selfless act to donate his money in honor of the Parks family. Thanks Dan.

Would be nice to see TJ Lang get on board, now that he's back in town, and with another 30 million in his pocket.

The TJ Lang Strength & Conditioning Center.......for a million.

Lyke and Dan McClean deserve all kinds of credit for the work they've done in development. They've raised they amount of donors and $$$ gifts to athletics, even outside of this campaign. Substantially. Not to mention Lyke has revenue up and season ticket holders up as well.

This department's administration has accomplished what so many said was impossible at EMU: 1. Winning football season and a bowl game. 2. Get football season ticket and (real) individual game ticket purchases markedly higher. 3. Generate serious $$$ from new donors. 4. Major, multi-million dollar capital upgrades to our facilities.

Not everything has been perfect under Lyke's tenure, but hard to argue against those results.

50K donation but this is NOT for the football facilities. This is for a project in the Convo, E-Club HOF.

I am glad this article is out there. Christian does a good job of addressing some of the bigger picture benefits of this project.

Absolutely. For example:

"This will free up almost 100,000 square feet of space on campus to be repurposed for academic and intramural sports use, said Spears, who was named interim athletic director on Monday after Heather Lyke departed to take the same position at the University of Pittsburgh."

This alone suggests to me that EMU Regents can chip in some money for this project as there is 'value received' for the larger university than simply athletics.

Matter of fact, if EMU had to expand a central campus building of equalize size (100,000 square feet) it would be an expensive project.

Dear steve,
You are absolutely correct. What dig it cost to refurbish Pray-Harold, or build the science complex? What is it going to cost for the refurbishing of Strong Hall? I think that project was in the neighborhood of 40 million. Just with what I have mentioned, the university is doing great things for the academic areas on campus. 35 million for the refurbishing of the athletic campus, with approximately 10 million coming from private donations, to me, is reasonable.

Ken,

My wild GUESS is that the 35M will be split 50 - 50 between donations and the university.

I' know nothing about architecture, etc. but could Bowen be remodeled, expanded, etc. to be re-purposed for academic use to further utilize the office space there.

P-H cost $42 million ( http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2011/09/18/e...ay-harrold ), Strong is going to be about $40 million ( https://www.theodysseyonline.com/emu-pla...lion-funds ), and the Science Renovation was about $90 million ( http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/...29069.html ).

And how much of that 172 million came/is going to come...from private donations?

If you'd read...
Anyway, 111 mill or so came from increasing tuition by 4.5% in 2005 and funding a capital improvement account. Bonds also played a role. 62 million or so came from the state.

I don't want to sound snarky here, but those buildings will be filled with students every day. They will be accessible to all students. Those buildings will house faculty offices and research projects. As a result, I'm fine with minimal funding from private donors going to these projects.

Didn't need to read........already knew the answer......and yet the uninformed/misled masses still scream about 'wasted' money. Even when it's gifted (free) to them.

Nothing snarky, that 172 million may or may not have been money well spent. One thing is sure, it was all on the taxpayer/student dime. Also, all of these buildings will be accessible to all students, and even more in the form of fans, alumni, and the greater community at large. The buildings will also house faculty offices (coaches, trainers, other staff).

The bigger point is this comparatively small project (170+ vs 35), which will probably end up being 50% paid for by private donations, which ultimately puts the student/public price tag at around 15-17 million, is a gigantic home run for the school, the students, faculty, community, etc.

In addition, as mentioned elsewhere, apparently this will free up some 100k sq.ft of existing space for repurposing and reorganization. If that space had to be built from scratch, would the cost be more than 15-17 million? Since the answer is yes, it could be argued that the overall 'cost' of this project is zero.

Yet the naysayers and EMU haters still capture the headlines. Luckily, there are still some people in positions of power at EMU that get it.

Can't wait to see it all come together.

RE: Football Facilities!!!!!
Simple solution to all of this:

Donations raise 50% and EMU uses state bonds to pay the remaining 50% over say 20 years.

As E'Tough indicated, getting 100K square feet of central campus space for say 17M is a bargain, and NOT a gift to athletics.

Faculty, students, etc. need to get 'out of their corners' and consider this a legitimate business deal.

It is a 'TRADE' whereby athletics gives up valuable space in return for the U using some bond authority to complete the project which allows them to free up space for the rest of the U.

I heard from a football alumnus that the renderings are available. He also said that once the project is completed, EMU will have the top MAC facilities in both Football and Basketball.

That's great to hear. This needs to be sold as a benefit to the entire campus, and student body, which it is.........with the repurposing and consolidation of a larger facilities plan.

Regents really need to get this vote done, and roll all of this out in public in a big way..........soon.

Can't wait to see the renderings!

Dear Friends,
Did you see that the announcement of the new president of Western, made the front page of the Free Press? The author of the article, our friend David Jesse. I guess we now know of whom he is a supporter. Nothing against the man who got the job, just as I said, what a difference in coverage.

And Detroit News, Mlive, etc.

http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/lo...100371810/

This guy has a tremendous resume for a MAC school in MI.

I certainly would have welcomed him to EMU.

His list of schools MSU, Carnegie-Mellon, Maryland and Georgetown is quite impressive.

I would normally wonder why he'd be interested in a MI school, but he has taught at MSU so he has some roots in the state.

A Dem politician and Obama 'Czar' as the new school President.
