Cal Baptist current #1 in NCAA D2 West
They are also #8 nationally. Im getting really excited for CBU.

WAC expansion canidates Western Washington and UC-San Diego are #2 and 3 in the West and WWU is #15 in D2 nationally ahile UCSD is #26, if you will. Most votes for non Top 25 school.

RE: Cal Baptist current #1 in NCAA D2 West
For as smooth as GCU's transition to D1 and joining the WAC has been, there are some things that make me think CBU can be even more successful right away:

CBU has a longer runway to build up speed: GCU had less than a calendar year between the D1 announcement & first D1 game. While they will face similar challenges not being tournament eligible, CBU still has nearly double the time to recruit & sign D1 players.

CBU will have continuity of players:
7 players on their current #1 ranked roster are freshmen or sophomores. These are the same players that will be juniors and seniors who have played together for 2-3 years (assuming all stay) when CBU finally joins the WAC. Among them are three 6'7 forwards and a 6'2 sophomore guard who averages 13ppg.

CBU will have continuity of coaching: Majerle replaced Pennell in March 2013, giving him just 7 months to build a staff and program before playing GCU's first D1 game. CBU's HC Rick Roy has been in place for 3 years, running his program & recruiting/coaching players who fit that program with definite success.

CBU has a true college coach:
I love Coach Majerle. Wouldn't trade him for anything in the world. That said, he didn't know a thing about college coaching or recruiting when he walked in the door. CBU's Roy has been a college coach since 2000. He has coached in D1 programs. Prior to CBU, he spent 3 years as lead assistant under Randy Bennett at St. Mary's. I am guessing there will not be much of a learning curve for him.

CBU already has recruiting ties in CA: More accurately, Roy has deep roots in CA that go back almost 20 years. I expect CBU to outpace other WAC schools in recruiting CA pretty quickly. That is bad news for teams like GCU who have been dipping watering from that well.

All that is to suggest CBU could/should be good, maybe scary good, when they hook up with the rest of the conference in 2018-19. Anybody sitting on their hands now might get punched in the mouth by the new kid on the block in a couple years.

Cal Baptist doesn't have:

Majerle's name recognition
Colangelo's ties and resulting scheduling advantages and recruiting advantages
For-profit barrels of cash to recruit globally (6 of GCU's current roster come from outside the US, from Europe, Africa and Australia)
with only three from Arizona.

GCU's success will be a tough act to follow.

As you mentioned, CBU has the CA recruiting angle as a huge plus - but will it outweigh the others? GCU has zero SoCal players currently.

They will have to recruit D1 players, which current athletes on all their teams are not. It is part of the transitioning process. GCU had to do the same.

RE: Cal Baptist current #1 in NCAA D2 West
Cal Baptist attendance this year (take dates into consideration for holidays and school breaks)

Van Dyne Gym seats 1,100. They are not in the new 5,000+ seat arena they will have for WAC play.

11/11 Montana State-Billings 1057
11/12 CS-Dominguez Hills 833
11/19 Cal Poly-Pomona 556
Thanksging break begins
11/22 #22 UC-San Diego 785
11/25 Simon Fraser 387
11/26 Arkansas Fort-Smith 423
Thanksgiving break ends

All conference games from this point forward except games vs CS-San Marcos and Life Pacific
12/3 Azuza Pacific 1090
12/8 Dixie State 723
Christmas break begins
12/17 Fresno Pacific 618
12/19 CS-San Marcos 721
12/29 Life Pacific 405
Christmas break ends

1/14 Concordia (CA) 1125 sell out
1/16 Academy of Art 792
1/28 Notre Dame De Namur 986
1/30 Hawaii-Hilo 732

2/2 Hawaii Pacific 1089
2/4 BYU-Hawaii 822
2/25 Point Loma 1100 sell out

The Pac-West conference tournament starts in two days in Irvine. So the regular season is finished

Average: 791
Capacity %: 71.9%

Average with students on campus: 909
Capacity with students%: 82.6%

Right now, numbers are comparable with the bottom of the WAC. But we have to consider:
A.) If it will rise when the new arena is opened
B.) What going D.1 will do for attendance
C.) When students won't be on break during WAC games at D1 level, as they are for PacWest games at D2

So attendance isn't great right now, but still promising, taking into consideration the size of Van Dyne Gym.

What was GCU's attendance like during the D2 days?

Watching the MLB Network. Sean Casey doing interview at the Brewers complex, in the outfield....right in front of a huge, GCU wall sign.

CBU will be the 25th D1 school in California for the record. Not a big advantage for CBU by any means

I think the value of Majerleā€™s name recognition has largely been in establishing legitimacy of GCU in local & national sports media. Roy might struggle a little more than Majerle did with trying to get CBU in the consciousness of those covering SoCal sports.

Mr. Colangelo's relationships/influence in basketball around the country & across the globe are unparalleled. Still, I'm not going to sell short the relationships Roy has established in 20 years of college coaching either. He is undoubtedly going to be calling in scheduling favors to schools in the WCC & BW. I'm guessing some of those schools are ones we'd all love to be scheduling.

I'm not sure what GCU's tax status has to do with international recruiting. I'm pretty sure better than half of WAC teams have at least one foreign born player. And if you think a guy who was the lead assistant at St. Mary's for 3 years doesn't have recruiting ties in Australia, you aren't paying attention. Shoot. Roy's D2 roster right now has 2 Australian players & 1 from Germany.

GCU doesn't have any SoCal players, but Oscar Frayer & Damari Milstead are 2 of the best recruits GCU has gotten to date. They are both also from the Bay-area. If we had to recruit them 2-3 years from now, CBU would undoubtedly be another school GCU would be in competition with for kids like these.

I'm not saying CBU will take the WAC regular season crown in Year 1, but the Lancers have a lot going for them. Hopefully, they'll be coming into what should be a much stronger WAC than GCU joined. We've seen talent & play elevate over the last couple seasons & that trend must continue for all schools.

If not, I wouldn't be shocked to see CBU finish in top half of the WAC from the start, much like GCU has.

What was GCU's attendance like during the D2 days?

So, in Russ Pennell's first 2 years coaching GCU (D2), all home games were played in the 2000 seat Antelope Gym. Attendance was as follows:

2009-10: 590/game (29.5% capacity)
2010-11: 1175/game (58.8% capacity)

The GCU Arena, official seating of 4602 , was built and opened for play in Fall 2011 (in an exhibition game against none other than Arizona State). Predictably, attendance grew:

2011-12: 2278/game (49.5% capacity)
2012-13: 2396/game (52.1% capacity)

Thus ended the illustrious Russ Pennell & D2 eras for GCU basketball. The rest, as they say, is... well... you know:

2013-14: 4373/game (95.0% capacity)

GCU Arena expansion to 7000 seats

2014-15: 5170/game (73.9% capacity)
2015-16: 5806/game (82.9% capacity)
2016-17: 6817/game (97.4% capacity)

CBU is going to do fine in D-I. They really don't have any huge new investments to be made.

It's quite a jump from the 1,700 seat Van Dyne Gym to the 5,200 seat CBU Event Center ($73m to build). But moving up will up the profile and the attendance. And I think it's going to be a hit. I think all WAC fans will look forward to the triangle of rivalry between CBU, GCU, and CSUB. This will help all three. Naysayers I think are going to be wrong on this one. The Lancers will compete head up almost from day one.
