Exclamation 2017 Spring Football Practice
Inauspicious start to spring practice, as the first session was cancelled yesterday due to weather.

Madia article from the past couple days:

What To Watch For As JMU Begins Spring Practice

Dukes' Spring Practice Starts Tuesday

Some takeaways:
Sounds like there are no plans to redshirt Cole Johnson.
RG position might be the biggest question mark.
They are going to see if Raven Greene and Jordan Brown can be interchangeable in the safety and rover positions.

This makes sense IMO. He's the backup next year, while hopefully we redshirt Mr. Football South Carolina. The next year, the two can compete for the job. If Cole doesn't win the job, he would have lots of transfer opportunities because he still has a redshirt year to burn with the transfer. Obviously, I'm not hoping he transfers, but this seems like a good plan to do right by the kid.

Day one (or day two, depending on how you look at it) is in the books. Nothing particularly noteworthy to mention although early enrollee Marcus Hawkins (along with John Daka & Jordan Brown) does get a shout out for winning his match in tug-of-war type strength drill. We have to replace Stone along the DL who had a great 2nd half of the season. It'll be interesting to see if he can work his way into the rotation as a true freshman.

RE: 2017 Spring Football Practice
The successful recruitment of Moloney gave the staff optionality this coming season.

I dont think a call needs to be made on Johnson right away, unless they want to send a message to Moloney (not Johnson) that he will have two years (at the minimum) to lead the team without having someone breathing down his neck (provided he develops into the stud QB many have projected).

Has anyone seen Waldman play?

That photo looks cool with Dhall in it. I wonder until the other side of Bridgeforth is done, if you'll be able to sit in Dhall and watch the football game? Hopefully not a lot of people do it, rather have them in the stands. But it seems like the second floor is tall enough to see most of the field/video board...I don't know the layout of Dhall though, so maybe most of that side will be food prep/kitchen area?!

With no introductions necessary between the coaching staff and their players, second-year coach Mike Houston said the practice went smooth — a much different assessment than he said he had following Madison’s first practice last spring, which was his first leading the team after taking over the program.

“Last year, I was ready to slit my wrists,” Houston said.

How f*ckin funny. I don't care how old I am, I'm going to get a graduate degree wherever this guy goes next so I can always root for his team, even if it's ODU or Liberty.

Well I am from Jersey but I'm probably a good standard deviation away from their douche quotient.

I thought Cole Johnson looked really sharp. Mack Cullen made some nice catches. Could Robbie Walker be our next Rashard Davis?

RE: 2017 Spring Football Practice
New article today that expands on the interchangeable safety/rover position previously mentioned. Features some comments from Raven and Coaches Houston and Trott. The big benefit cited is that it will allow them to stay on the same side of the field and not have to switch. I think it will probably give them some options for disguising coverages and blitzes.

They are also looking to have one player who can be the primary back-up to come in for either spot. The guys mentioned are Adam Smith, who saw time last year as a true Fr, or one of the rFr (D’Angelo Amos or Reggie Collins). D'Angelo Amos was listed as CB back last year and was just switched to safety. If he was still on the team, Marcell Johnson probably would have been a strong contender to be that 3rd guy.

No practice this week due to spring break.

Perhaps one of the ex-FB players that frequent the board could chime in, but I believe that interchangeable safeties is a hallmark of the 2-deep zone. I wonder if we will be going with that look more this fall.

The ability to have two safeties interchangeable does not allow the offense to read which safety will be the deep zone. Offenses can easily read this when they have to shift due to the strongside and weakside calls. When I played I always played the weak side of the 4-2-5. If we would get caught in a no huddle situation I stayed on the strong side because I could play that as well. I was the safety who rotated from the box to the deep hash in passing situations.

Per DNR this morning. Two guys hurt on same play in Nattional Championship game will be back later in spring practice. Dimitri Holloway and David Ezeagwu. Holloway had a great game vs NDSU.

Thanks for the update on Holloway and Ezeagwu. Was wondering how they were doing. Both injuries looked real bad at Frisco, saw one on crutches on the sideline later during the game, do not remember which one it was.

Glad to hear they are recovering.

There was some weird stuff going on. Between that play, Rigney getting hurt, false starts, etc. it was like a Harry Potter movie where someone in the stands is f@$&ing with our team with their hexes and sh!t. Did Hermione go to NDST?

Holloway and Ezeagwu were injured in Frisco, not Fargo.
