Saw him speak last year at the Alumni Dinner - really good speaker, but yea he's busy (unless he gets kicked out completely of all Trump speeches!)

Arthur is building his resume for his post football career and a future gig as President of JMU.

Which makes me think we aren't that far from a new AD based on Bourne's age. You have to have lots of energy to run a department that is almost 7 days a week depending on the time of year.
Would Whit Babcock consider leaving Tech and come home to guide the JMU program? Pay decrease for sure. Following in his father's legacy who was AD in the early 90's could be attractive or possibly a turn off depending on his perspective.
The experiences he is building now could help tremendously at JMU if they decide to elevate the football program to FBS.
His Va Tech contract is through 2020.

RE: Arthur Moats
So who all have been the athletic directors at JMU? Can anyone provide year ranges?

Dean Ehlers
Brad Babcock
Dom Lemish
Jeff Bourne (1999-Present)

Brad Babcock was never an AD (unless he was briefly the acting AD before Lemish got the job). He was only an Associate AD.

Ehlers
Lemish
Bourne

Whit makes at least 3X what Bourne makes. Don't see him coming back to JMU unless it ends bad at Tech.

Brad was an associate AD back in 90's through 2003 I think.

Ehlers

Bourne

It was Ehlers from the early 70s until the early 90s. Lemish throughout most of the 90s and then Bourne since 1999?

20 something years of Dean Ehlers is a good chunk of time. Jeff is approaching that milestone too.

Yeah, I know Lemish started in Spring 1994. I think he was gone by late 1998. We didn't have an AD when Mickey was hired in March 1999. Dr. Tom Martin was the acting AD at the time and he led the hiring of Mickey. Bourne came on very soon thereafter.

Got it. For some reason I though Babcock was the AD when I was in school. Perhaps he was just more visible at sporting events or my memory is just completely shot.
Just for my reference, what was an associate AD back then? Sport specific?

Whenever JMU goes FBS you would think they would have to pay the new AD accordingly. There would still be a gap with Tech but not as much as there is now.

I'm not entirely sure. I think your speculation is correct that associate ADs oversaw different sports. I base that on the fact that, first, Babcock was always around the football team. Second, when I went in for my exit interview (after senior eligibility exhausted ), it was conducted by Lemish and Babcock. All the other seniors that year met with both of them as well--2 on 1.

So I was completely in the Lemish period. Started in 94 and graduated in 98. Had no idea who the AD was at the time.
