So if any of those three teams win the socon tournament none of them get the auto NIT bid? If so that's dumb
Update: since it was a tie the team of those 3 that goes tha furthest without winning the tournament gets the NIT bid.
That's a smart way to do it
In the 3-way for 1st, UNCG gets the #1 seed by way of the best record against the other 2 teams (ETSU and Furman), at 3-1. ETSU went 1-3, unfortunately, for the #3 seed - and thus must struggle against Furman (again) in the tournament semis, should both teams get there (which is FAR from automatic). Had ETSU beaten UNCG in that last game last night in Greensboro, they would have had the #1 seed. So.....huge difference.
The NIT bid is more complicated. It's actually hard for to determine IF the NIT guarantees a non-NCAA tied champion. One thing out says they take the furthest non-NCAA advancer (as you suggest above). Two other places (the NIT'S own site and wikipedia) tends to read like they don't necessarily take one in such a situation. (They have a committee that decides things in gray areas, it seems.) So, it's equivocal and confusing to us. I guess we'll just play 'em one at a time and see what happens.
As a side note, I don't know if you all have noticed or not, but Chattanooga has totally imploded after being the favorite pre-season and leading (or tied for it) most of the year. Internal dissension, dismissal, suspension, etc. Long story. And germane, because they're (still) the #4 seed, which gives UNCG the (apparent) easiest path to the finals.
P.S. -- UNCG and Furman are both quite good. Both have multiple weapons, play smart, don't beat themselves, and defend well. Wouldn't shock me to see any of the 3 main possibilities representing our conference win an NCAA game - obviously depending on seed - which most likely would be a 12 to 14, we're guessing. (More likely 13 or 14 imo.) Not saying such a win is likely - just that it wouldn't shock me at all.
Good luck to you guys.
