Reese and Jacoby Cups
Not a good day for us yesterday. Akron won both men's and women's track (we finished 4 out 5 on the men's side and 3rd on the women's side). In addition Akron won women's swimming. To make matters worse our two secret weapons wrestling and gymnastics are misfiring this season. The women will be somewhere between 3-5 out of seven and the wrestling team will more than likely finish last or next to last. Golf, baseball and softball need to win to have any chance.

Anyone know how we stand? I would think we have a chance to win both.

RE: Reese and Jacoby Cups
My unofficial calculations show the women in second having to pass NIU in softball and the overall competition to win. It's doubtful they will get out of second. The men are near the bottom(10th I think). I am assuming the regular season is what counts (it has in the past) so basketball actually finished 4 or 5 not 1st. The rule always was if you played a round robin schedule in the regular season that was how they based the Reese Cup points. Either way winning is not going to happen as they need more than a first in basketball and baseball to win. They actually are a distant tenth. A very poor year for them. XC, wrestling and Track were much worse than usual.

Didn't know the MAC tournament wouldn't count. I was figuring on a basketball, golf, and baseball championship. And looking at the other championships, it seemed like we would have a chance. Oh well.

I am not official. They have changed the rules before and messed me up. Our last or near last finishes in XC, wrestling and football killed us.

RE: Reese and Jacoby Cups
Now that track is completed the women's Jacoby Cup is also final. It looks like Kent will finish a fairly close second to NIU. Our last place finish in XC which was won by NIU was the main difference. Also the fact that NIU finished ahead of Kent in gymnastics (probably for the first time ever) also didn't help. I have been wrong before due to scoring format changes but that's the way it looks.

So with championships in Soccer, Field Hockey, Golf, and Softball and we don't win the Jacoby cup? Did No Ill win anything other than Volleyball and Cross Country? There's some funny math there. How many electoral votes did No Ill get for Volleyball?

He said earlier MAC-T championships don't count. So softball wouldn't be counted as a championship. I believe him, but that seems strange to me. If that is the case, shouldn't the MAC send their regular season champions to the NCAA-T each year?

RE: Reese and Jacoby Cups
NIU winning XC (13 points) and us finishing last (1 point) is a lot to make up. Too bad XC overpowers soccer, basketball and golf but in this competition they are all equal. Also the rule in the past has been if the sport plays a round robin schedule (ala volleyball, basketball, softball, gymnastics, soccer, field hockey) its the regular season that counts and not the tournament. The tournament gives you the NCAA bid and the Director Cup points but not Jacoby points.

It would be nice if the MAC would publish the rules and update the standings throughout the season but they do not (if somebody knows different let me know). About 5 years ago when EMU won they posted a complete table of points by sport on their web site and that is what I use. Any changes since then are not in my calculations. I never match exactly but I am always very close. If they happened to decide that the tournaments count we will probably win it. There is still some hope. I like the regular season counting but I do think a tournament championship should be worth a few bonus points.

I've asked for the rules a few time but neither Kent State or the MAC have responded to the request. No time I guess.

RE: Reese and Jacoby Cups
Looks like 7th place finish in the Reese Cup competition. Poor performances in XC, wrestling, football and to a lesser extent track couldn't be overcome by golf and baseball. I have Ohio and Akron essentially tied for first so I'm not sure who is going to win it. WMU in third is also within my margin of error.

Kent finishes 8th for in the Reese Cup standings. Akron wins for the 2nd consecutive year.

A 2nd place finish for the Lady Flashes in the Jacoby Cup race. Northern wins the award for the first time.

RE: Reese and Jacoby Cups
Not looking too good this year. Men are in 9th with only basketball left in the winter. A 4th to 6th place finish won’t help much. Golf, baseball and track will help but probably not enough too get us into the top three. The women are 6th but headed to a 10th or worse in basketball and for the first time ever in my memory gymnastics at 2-3 aren’t going to help. Track finished 4th indoors so that’s ok, golf will probably win and who knows about softball. Looks like a very mediocre year at best.

The Jacoby Cup competition is over and by my calculations (not 100% guaranteed) it looks like the women will finish 5th or 6th.

The men are also in 5th with baseball yet to come. They might move up a spot or two depending on how the baseball standings finish up but the Reese Cup isn’t coming our way this year either.

Dont worry fans!!! Joel searched the whole country was turned down multiple times but finally landed on a 25 year old energetic football coach. Now Joel will be able to take funds from other sports to fund football and we will get 2-3 wins in the MAC. Thus improving our standings next year.

I am not sure why you are salty, most everyone is excited about our new football coach and you don't have a clue about how many times Joel was turned down. Nobody does. It was a ridiculously quiet search.

Women’s competition is over with the women a close third. With my error margin first isn’t likely but not beyond the realm of possibility. Stay tuned.

With baseball left he men are in 11th. A first in baseball could kick them up a few spots but overall not a very good season.
