An eye opening perpective on what it takes to comb through 1500 kids in the 2018 class. one challenge of being late to recruit and make up for the loss of top 9 in the 2017 class, is not being able to focus on the 2018 class until after NSD. So Lester and Co are now a couple months if not a full year behind other programs on prospective recruits for next year. It takes a great deal of time to watch video, make contacts with coaches, parents and players. So keep that in mind when we criticize why we don't have the contact with recruits that established regimes have. If anyone wants them to throw offers out at every 3 & 4 * within 6 hrs then don't complain when one runs afoul of the law. http://www.mlive.com/broncos/index.ssf/2...l#comments

Laxer, here is my counter to this. Every one of these guys was working in college football last year on some level. That means they were recruiting, because everyone recruits on these staffs. I read these comments, and it sounds like everyone thinks these guys are starting from scratch. They're not, they should have relationships in place. If they are so unaware of the kids in the 18' class, than they weren't doing their jobs last year, and I don't see how that should give us confidence.

In general, I agree with a lot of what you just said and do share similar concerns. However I will counter your counter by reminding you that Robert Spillane was our first commitment in the 2014 class and WMU was his first offer at the time. (too soon?)

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think it's too early in the process right now to know for sure.

The question is to what level and how successful were they at recruiting in our local area or 6hr radius? Starting with the HC, Tim Lester spent about a year as Purdue QB coach. I haven't heard which of their recruits he was instrumental in bringing in? Prior to that he was at Syracuse a part of their territory falls within WMU 6hrs. what is his raport with MI HS coaches, certainly he should have connections to IN and IL but a year there was not much time at all to see a lot of who were then HS Jr's.

I have most confidence in Coach Johns and his connections from IU. He should be able to recruit the area but not sure of his connections to SE Michigan and Detroit an essential talent pipeline for Western.

Coach Daoust spent 1 year at Ball St. Hardly a recruiting powerhouse of the Midwest. only 1 year in Muncie after 4 at Syracuse.

Of the top 3 in the of chain of command only 1 has more than 1 year of recent experience in the immediate area. Yes they all were recently working in college football in some capacity but they can't possibly be at the same level as coaching staffs who have made multiple visits and have established ties to schools in the area of the Great Lakes. My original point is that they are logistically behind on the 2018 class after having to catch up on the 2017 class is that not true?

I would have to believe that coach Esposito has a wealth of connections within our 6 hour radius. He coached for a year or two under Cubit, then built the Davenport program in GR from scratch. Sure Davenport doesn't field the same level of talent by a long shot, but he had to build relationships with im sure a ton of coaches who likely fielded players that also went D1... He did a pretty good job from what I saw... not easy to come out the gate and be competitive in year 1... and he went 6-5...

I'm not all that worried at this point. I'm going to sit back and let the results over the next few years speak for themselves... I'm not willing to just assume because the great PJ left that we shouldn't expect to continue our upward trajectory.
