I believe Will Michael
Saw him play baseball this spring. He is a very aggressive athlete. Tough physically and mentally. My understanding is that he has some running skills, also, which could bode well back there.

RE: 2017 Football
Interesting interview with Cignetti on CAA Football.

He comes from a family of coaches, has been in some big programs and right away he's shaking it up at Elon. He's going to get it right, he has everywhere he's been.

It will only strengthen the conference improving from the bottom up.

Planning on two early entry QB's as one of the starters.

Go Tribe 22 more days!

You'd expect an improvement in sacks just due to positive regression.

RE: 2017 Football
I really like the attitude and work ethic of this kid.

I believe this is a NFL statistic, but I can't imagine college be much different. When there is a sack against the offense 84% of the time it leads to turn over on downs.

This group can really make a difference this year if they can get their yards per carry in the low 3's (LB's too). If they can get to 30 sacks it will make a huge difference this season

RE: 2017 Football
Just for reference:

2007- 10 sacks
2008- 24 sacks
2009- 49 sacks
2010- 19 sacks
2011- 19 sacks
2012- 14 sacks
2013- 31 sacks
2014- 34 sacks
2015- 22 sacks
2016- 10 sacks

You don't want to have anything in common with the 2007 defense.

There's a lot that can lead to a high number of sacks. Did we get off to big lead forcing them to pass to score quickly? Did did we have the lead late in the game forcing to abandon the run? If teams aren't passing against us it's hard to rack up sacks.

The biggest reason last year was that teams ran the ball more than they passed against us. We couldn't really pin our ears back and go after the QB because of that.

If these guys can turn this around we could be very competitive. We have some studs. They need to stay healthy and we need six or 7 guys we can rotate in to keep fresh legs.

In all fairness, the sacks were probably low last season because teams could just run the ball for 5 yards at a time against W&M. Even when the defense knew the opposing offense was going to run, they still couldn't stop it.

2017 Football
2008 & 2009 - Adrian Tracy
2013 & 2014 - Mike Reilly

Laycock comments in this year's defensive line preview that the line will be solid, but we still don't have the explosion around the end that we need...Remains to be seen if anyone will step up and fill the Tracy/Reilly legacy (Johnson/Suarez ?) that drove/enabled those high sack years. Didn't hurt having a Lissemore beside Tracy, either.

Sacks per pass attempt (which is sacks plus passes, since college counts sacks as rushing attempts):

2007: 1 sack every 27 attempts
2008: 1 sack every 14.41 attempts
2009: 1 sack every 9.41 attempts
2010: 1 sack every 19.95 attempts
2011: 1 sack every 18.37 attempts
2012: 1 sack every 24.71 attempts
2013: 1 sack every 14.19 attempts
2014: 1 sack every 12.82 attempts
2015: 1 sack every 19 attempts
2016: 1 sack every 29.2 attempts

They didn't get a lot of sacks last year because they weren't very good.

The numbers from 2009 are stupid.

They had two guys on the d-line that ended up being drafted. That's unfair at the 1-AA level.

For W&M's offensive line, Chris Durant and Connor Hilland deliver a powerful left

Yep. The even crazier thing about that 09 defense is that we lost a senior defense captain & 3rd round draft pick to graduation going into the year.

How many guys from that team ended up getting NFL reps? Lissenmore, Caldwell, Tracy, Grimes, Webb. Archer also got quite a few looks - did he ever get a regular season snap? Couplin was a redshirt that year. So technically at least six?
